Piastri managed to finish third on the podium in the Miami GP after an improved showing from McLaren after a five-week F1 break.

However, the same issues remain for the drivers and fans after the 50-50 power engine split was introduced for the 2026 season. After three GPs to start the season, the F1 brought in some minor regulations to reduce the impact of the electrical power on the engine.

This promotes driver skill, rather than battery recharging throughout the race. Although the slight tweak isn’t doing enough to win over drivers.

The FIA president has revealed a change in the engines will come after complaints from Oscar Piastri (pictured far right) and his fellow drivers. (Images: Getty Images)

(Getty Images)

The driving has still been compared to the game ‘Mario Kart’ with a ‘yo-yo effect’ taking place when drivers attempt to overtake each other due to the electrical charge. Piastri said while he appreciated the collaboration between the FIA and F1 to make minor changes as the season continues, the Australian still hinted the racing isn’t delivering an authentic experience.

“The collaboration again from the FIA and F1 has been good, but there’s only so many things you can change with the hardware we have,” Piastri said. “The races are exactly the same. Today was my first proper experience of overtaking people and having to defend…it’s pretty crazy, to be honest.

“It’s a bit random, all the closing speeds are huge. Trying to anticipate that as the defending driver is incredibly tough to do. I wasn’t that pleased with one the moves George did but I found myself almost doing the same move five laps later, just because the closing speed is enormous. From that side of things, not much has changed. Some changes in the future are still needed for sure.”

FIA boss reveals incoming change to engines

And the FIA boss has revealed changes could be coming. Speaking at the Miami GP, FIA president Mohammad ben Sulayem claimed a V8 engine could be introduced, which could appeal to both fans and drivers.

“It’s coming. At the end of the day, it’s a matter of time,” he said to Reuters. “In 2031, the V8, the FIA will have the power to do it, without any votes from the PUMs (Power Unit Manufacturers). That’s the regulations. But we want to bring it one year earlier, which everyone now is asking for.”

Talking about the V8 engine, the FIA president added: “You get the sound, less complexity, lightweight. You will hear about it very soon and it will be with a very, very minor electrification.”

Power unit manufacturers operate under a cap, but it is believed they have spent $660 million on these units across the time of the new regulations. This is a huge deterrent for manufactures wanting to enter the F1 field. A change to cheaper made engines would most likely improve competition on the manufacturing end.

Oscar Piastri (pictured left) talked about the current situation in the F1.
