{"id":650903,"date":"2026-05-05T10:08:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T10:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/650903\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T10:08:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T10:08:10","slug":"we-still-have-big-ambitions-adam-yates-looks-to-emulate-brother-simon-as-uae-team-emirates-leader-for-giro-ditalia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/650903\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;We still have big ambitions&#8217; &#8211; Adam Yates looks to emulate brother Simon as UAE Team Emirates leader for Giro d&#8217;Italia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-7dd57e28-4529-434d-8e6b-7d799fc84f6f\">In the absence of Tadej Poga\u010dar and Isaac del Toro and Jo\u00e3o Almeida, Adam Yates will lead UAE Team Emirates-XRG at the Giro d&#8217;Italia, with a mix of other experienced and talented other riders chasing stage victories.<\/p>\n<p>Poga\u010dar and del Toro will lead UAE at the Tour de France, while Almeida is out of action due to a lingering virus that disrupted his spring.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7dd57e28-4529-434d-8e6b-7d799fc84f6f-2\">33-year-old Yates made his Giro debut back in 2017 and has seven top-ten Grand Tour finishes on his palmares, and UAE will be hoping he can give the team at least another podium finish after Poga\u010dar\u2019s victory in 2024, Almeida\u2019s third-place finish in 2023 and Isaac del Toro\u2019s runner-up spot last year.<\/p>\n<p>Article continues below <\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Yates will have the support of Australia&#8217;s Jay Vine, Igor Arrieta, Mikkel Bjerg, Jhonatan Narv\u00e1ez, Marc Soler and talented Grand Tour debutants Jan Christen and Ant\u00f3nio Morgado.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">UAE are expected to challenge Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe duo of Giulio Pellizziari and Jai Hindley in the three-week battle for the maglia rosa. Yates will look to emulate his twin brother Simon, who won the 2025 Giro before <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/teams-riders\/grand-tour-champion-simon-yates-set-to-make-shock-early-retirement\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/teams-riders\/grand-tour-champion-simon-yates-set-to-make-shock-early-retirement\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opting to walk away from professional cycling before the 2026 season<\/a>. The two recently trained at home in Andorra before Adam left for the Grande Partenza in Bulgaria.<\/p>\n<p>Yates has won stages at the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a in recent seasons with UAE, with only a stage win in Italy missing from his palmares.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not having Jo\u00e3o Almeida will change our strategy slightly, but we still have big ambitions and still want to go for results. The win in O Gran Cami\u00f1o was a good tester and I\u2019ve had a solid block with the team in Sierra Nevada, so I think as a group we\u2019re ready.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">UAE have kept back several key riders for their Tour de France squad but their Giro line-up is still strong.<\/p>\n<p>Jay Vine is the Australian national time trial champion, and will target the time trial stage on the Tuscan coast and test his Grand Tour form after his disrupted spring following his <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/teams-riders\/crash-after-kangaroo-in-peloton-on-final-stage-of-tour-down-under-race-leader-jay-vine-caught-up-and-had-to-chase-back\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/teams-riders\/crash-after-kangaroo-in-peloton-on-final-stage-of-tour-down-under-race-leader-jay-vine-caught-up-and-had-to-chase-back\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kangaroo crash<\/a> at the Tour Down Under. Vine won three stages at the 2025 Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a and could emerge in the GC if he avoids losing time early in the race and while riding for Yates.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>Jhonatan Narv\u00e1ez, Mikkel Bjerg and Marc Soler have been selected for their Grand Tour experience, with all three previously riding for Poga\u010dar at the Tour. Igor Arrieta made his Grand Tour debut in last year&#8217;s Giro, riding for del Toro and finishing fourth on stage 8 to Castelraimondo won by Luke Plapp.<\/p>\n<p>Narv\u00e1ez and Bjerg were also involved in the Tour Down Under crash, with the Ecuadorian only making his return to racing at the Giro. However he famously won stage 1 of the 2024 Corsa Rosa to stop then rival Poga\u010dar from taking the leader&#8217;s pink jersey.
