critically about where humanity is headed, the judges said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xLqpwmUHXq\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt [is] an extraordinary novel that balances both heart-pounding tension and emotional depth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Hineraukatauri me Te Ara P\u016boro by Elizabeth Gray won two awards.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" received the Russell Clark Award for Illustration, for Hineraukatauri me Te Ara P\u016boro, written by Elizabeth Gray (Ng\u0101ti R\u0113hia, Ng\u0101ti Uep\u014dhatu, Tama \u016apoko ki te awa tipua, Ng\u0101ti T\u016bwharetoa an\u014d hoki), which tells the p\u016brakau of the becoming of Hineraukatauri. <\/p>\n<p class=\"xLqpwmUHXq\" style=\"display:none\">The judges praised Wilson\u2019s illustrations, which they felt embodied the kaupapa with \u201ca breath-taking synaesthetic skill that seems quite magical\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xLqpwmUHXq\" style=\"display:none\">Hineraukatauri me Te Ara P\u016boro also won the Wright Family Foundation Te Kura Pounamu Award for a Book Originally Written in Te Reo M\u0101ori.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xLqpwmUHXq\" style=\"display:none\">This new award was introduced after the decision to split the Te Kura Pounamu category into two separate prizes, acknowledging the skills of original writing and translation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"xLqpwmUHXq\" Wh\u0101nau a Kai, Rongowhakaata, Te Aitanga a Mahaki, Ng\u0101ti Porou), translated by H\u0113ni Jacob (Ng\u0101ti Raukawa) and illustrated by Isobel Joy Te Aho-White (Ng\u0101ti Kahungunu, K\u0101i Tahu). <\/p>\n<p class=\"xLqpwmUHXq\" style=\"display:none\">Judges praised Jacob\u2019s excellent translation of the original tale. <\/p>\n<p class=\"xLqpwmUHXq\" style=\"display:none\">\u201c[It] flowed smoothly and provided a platform to spark conversation about the importance of Matariki.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"The Raven\u2019s Eye Runaways by Claire Mabey won the NZSA Best First Book class=\"xLqpwmUHXq\" style=\"display:none\">The NZSA Best First Book Award was awarded to The Raven\u2019s Eye Runaways by Claire Mabey. <\/p>\n<p class=\"xLqpwmUHXq\" style=\"display:none\">Judges said the book stood out as \u201cthe work of a writer who wields words with exquisite care and understands the power of great storytelling\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"xLqpwmUHXq\"
