Garry Lyon and Adam Simpson had a tense exchange regarding the \u201cuncomfortable\u201d Carlton coaching situation.<\/p>\n

Plus John Longmire has revealed his mental health push to the AFL back in 2012 in the wake of the Elijah Hollands saga.<\/p>\n

LYON, SIMPSON\u2019S TENSE EXCHANGE OVER BLUES COACHING \u2018HYPOTHETICAL\u2019<\/p>\n

Fair to say it got a bit tense at the desk at one point.<\/p>\n

At the start of Adam Simpson and John Longmire\u2019s segment, Garry Lyon confronted Simpson about comments he made earlier this week flagging the premiership Eagles boss as a potential caretaker coach for Carlton<\/a> as Michael Voss comes under increased pressure.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s especially delicate for Simpson, who\u2019s currently working as a part-time coaching consultant and mentor to Voss.<\/p>\n

While Simpson earlier this year ruled out any desire to coach Carlton<\/a> two years on from his split from West Coast, it didn\u2019t stop Lyon from naming him as a candidate to take the reins at Ikon Park for the remainder of the season.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to get this off the table straight away, there\u2019s some tension in the air,\u201d Lyon began on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just presented some hypotheticals on Monday (about Carlton\u2019s coaching options). I don\u2019t like doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

To which Simpson interjected: \u201cYou don\u2019t like doing it? You love doing it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon responded: \u201cNo, history says I don\u2019t. I didn\u2019t even do it about you when you were struggling (at West Coast).<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I threw your name up as a possible hypothetical. I knew the answer, so I\u2019ll let you now declare.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simpson added: \u201cLet\u2019s just leave it as a hypothetical, hey? We\u2019ll move on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fellow AFL 360 co-host Gerard Whateley turned and asked Lyon: \u201cAre you going to follow up?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon replied: \u201cHe warned me, he said one question.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an awkward, uncomfortable situation, I know. And it\u2019s been discussed because of the situation we find ourselves in at Carlton. That was one we threw up.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Simpson wasn\u2019t willing to speculate on \u201chypotheticals\u201d and empathised for Voss.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been in the position before, everyone is talking about who\u2019s next when you\u2019re in the chair,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re just not comfortable talking about it. Whether you\u2019re working ay the club or not, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s appropriate to talk about.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re a coach and you know what it\u2019s like to be in those shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lyon concluded: \u201cWhich won\u2019t stop us, by the way. That\u2019s the business we\u2019re in. But I understand.\u201d <\/p>\n

LONGMIRE REVEALS HE LOBBIED FOR MENTAL HEALTH FUNDING<\/p>\n

Swans premiership coach John Longmire has revealed he advocated for mental health funding to sit outside the soft cap to the AFL Commission in 2012, following the league\u2019s evolving stance in the area.<\/p>\n

The league, in conjunction with the clubs, said it would \u201cimprove industry-wide healthcare governance standards\u201d in the wake of Elijah Hollands\u2019 on-field mental health episode<\/a> in Round 6 last month.<\/p>\n

One of the measures is to review the club football department soft cap, including potentially increasing minimum investment in healthcare and strengthening expert capability.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Wednesday night, Longmire, who also campaigned in 2015 for psychologists to be taken outside of the soft cap, spoke to his recommendations at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was one of a number of things (I presented). It\u2019s a great opportunity for the premiership coach to sit in front of the Commission, and talk about some of the things that they see in the game at that particular point in time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was one of many things I spoke about; it wasn\u2019t the only thing. But, it gave me the opportunity just to mention at the time that football clubs are just examples of what\u2019s happening in the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was growing mental health in the community, as there was at football clubs at that time. Not only growing issues, but it was coming to the surface \u2014 which was a great thing \u2014 now people are willing to talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the journey, there was a number of opportunities to speak to either the AFL or AFL Players\u2019 Association to put psychologists\u2019 costs outside the (soft) cap. To me, it just didn\u2019t make sense that we were capping player care in this particular instance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat discussion went on for quite a while, and then Covid hit. As we know, decisions had to be made about where you spend your money. It looks like the AFL are moving in the right direction now, which is a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

It comes after the AFL, during Covid, made a significant reduction to club soft caps, with the league only one year ago announcing limit increases for 2026 and 2027.<\/p>\n

West Coast premiership coach Adam Simpson concurred with his long-time counterpart, adding that the felt his recommendations simply weren\u2019t acted on at times.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t listen to a thing we presented. We heard Bevo (Luke Beveridge) speak talk the other day about some of the issues he sees in the game,\u201d Simpson told Fox Footy.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut unfortunately, they think we\u2019re a bit too single-minded with our clubs. Any coach that\u2019s been around for a little while sees a little bit, and has the feel of what\u2019s happening at AFL land \u2026 unfortunately they didn\u2019t listen to us too much.<\/p>\n
