The defensive effort is distinct from the US \u201cProject Freedom\u201d that was paused by President Donald Trump on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"French President Emmanuel Macron says their military movement \u201cremains distinct from the parties at war.\u201d\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/a96a72536e8bef93c33f1559a2fb0c5a3ed442e1.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>French President Emmanuel Macron says their military movement \u201cremains distinct from the parties at war.\u201dGetty Images<\/p>\n<p>The repositioning of the nuclear-powered Charles de Gaulle and its escorts comes as part of a proposed mission championed by France and Britain to restore maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, as soon as conditions allow.<\/p>\n<p>It \u201cmay help restore confidence among shipowners and insurers\u201d, Macron said on X. \u201cIt remains distinct from the parties at war.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Macron, who spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday, said he also intends to raise the matter with Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA return to calm in the Strait will help advance negotiations on nuclear issues, ballistic matters, and the regional situation,\u201d Macron wrote. \u201cEuropeans \u2026 will play their part.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Colonel Guillaume Vernet, spokesperson for the French armed forces chief of staff, stressed that the Hormuz coalition \u2013 drawn up by France, Britain and more than 50 nations \u2013 will not begin operating until two thresholds are cleared: The threat to shipping must come down, and the maritime industry must be reassured enough to use the strait.<\/p>\n<p>Even then, he told The Associated Press, any operation would require the agreement of neighbouring countries.
