Charlie Aldridge opened up his World Cup campaign with a third place at the opening round in Mona YongPyong<\/a> last weekend. Being one of the biggest and most powerful riders on the circuit enables Aldridge to make some more interesting choices rather than focusing purely on weight.\u00a0 His mechanic, Callum Wyllie, was kind enough to give me a full run-through of Aldridge’s Cannondale Scalpel Lab71, providing a deeper insight into some of the choices the Scottish Olympian has made.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Measuring at 193 cm (6\u20194\u201d), Aldridge is riding the XL size frame. A lot of brands don’t make the largest of reaches for XC bikes, but the Scalpel has a massive 510 mm reach on the XL, ideal for Aldridge\u2019s height. A 66.6\u00ba head angle is now a moderate-to-conservative option in the XC world, and the frame runs 120 mm of suspension travel front and rear.<\/p>\n

Aldridge’s suspension duties are handled by what is potentially the most unique setup on the World Cup circuit. Up front, Aldridge has Cannondale\u2019s Lefty Ocho, the upside-down, single-sided front suspension option from the American brand. Released back in 2018, the Ocho has spanned two generations of Scalpels, while the general Lefty concept has now been around for 26 years! With an update to the Scalpel rumoured to be coming this year, it will be interesting to see if the Ocho gets an update too.\u00a0<\/p>\n
