Reno’s Robby Snelling, a left-handed pitcher for the Miami Marlins, will make his major-league debut Friday against the Washington Nationals, a source told Nevada Sports Net. Manager Clayton McCullough announced the news to reporters later Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Snelling’s debut has been likely since the Marlins designated Chris Paddack for assignment Tuesday, which opened a rotation spot for Miami. The 22-year-old Snelling has more than earned the spot, dominating the minor leagues the last four seasons except for a difficult 2024 season.<\/p>\n

This year, Snelling has posted a 1.86 ERA in six starts in Triple-A, striking out an International League-leading 44 batters in 29 innings while allowing just 11 hits. In his last start, Snelling pitched five no-hit innings, striking out nine with one walk. The McQueen High graduate was coming off a strong 2025 season split between Double-A and Triple-A. Overall, he posted a 2.51 ERA in 25 starts. That included a 1.55 ERA with Triple-A Jacksonville over 11 starts.<\/p>\n

A first-round draft pick in 2022 (39th overall) by the San Diego Padres, Snelling had a tremendous first professional season, going 11-3 with a 1.82 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 103.2 innings and being named Baseball America’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year. After some changes to his mechanics, Snelling struggled in 2024, recording a 6.01 ERA in 16 Double-A starts before being dealt from San Diego to Miami in exchange for closer Tanner Scott at the trade deadline.<\/p>\n

Snelling found his old form during the 2025 offseason after a visit to Maven<\/a>, a baseball lab in Atlanta. He was named the Marlins’ minor-league pitcher of the year last season while winning a minor-league Gold Glove. During his minor-league career, Snelling has started 77 games and gone 27-21 with a 3.07 ERA, striking out 443 batters in 384 innings.<\/p>\n

One of the best players in Northern Nevada high school history, Snelling entered the 2022 draft as the 16th overall prospect, per MLB.com. He slipped a little down the draft board but still signed a $3 million signing bonus to turn pro out of high school over his commitment to play for SEC powerhouse LSU. Snelling, who also led McQueen to the state football championship game as the Lancers’ starting quarterback, was the first Northern Nevada player to be drafted in the first round straight out of high school since Douglas High’s Shawn Estes in 1991. <\/p>\n

Snelling will become the second McQueen High alum to reach the big leagues, joining Chris Aguila, an outfielder who played for the Marlins and Mets from 2004-06 and 2008. As a prep senior, Snelling went 8-0 with a 0.56 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 62.1 innings. He also hit .450 with six home runs and was named the Gatorade Nevada Baseball Player of the Year.<\/p>\n

Snelling is slated Friday to face a Nationals team that entered Wednesday tied for fifth in the big leagues with 183 runs scored. Washington boasts young stars James Wood (.232, 10 homers) and CJ Abrams (.287, eight homers). Miami entered Wednesday third in the NL East at 16-20.
