Australians have long been campaigning for this supermarket change<\/a> \u2014 and now, Woolworths has announced soft plastic recycling has finally returned<\/a> to hundreds of stores around the country.<\/p>\n

Environmentally conscious shoppers<\/a> are welcoming the return of the scheme, after the retail giant announced the service had now been rolled out across 700 stores in five states, years after it was controversially scrapped<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The revived soft plastics recycling program began as a small-scale trial across five Victorian stores in February 2024 and has since expanded to hundreds of locations, with selected stores in South Australia joining the rollout this week.<\/p>\n

Since that trial, Australians have already recycled an estimated 40 million pieces of soft plastic, roughly 310,000 kilograms, Woolworths says.<\/p>\n

Online this week, Woolworths loyalists<\/a> branded the move \u201cbrilliant\u201d, saying it was \u201cabout time\u201d the program was reinstated.<\/p>\n

Collected plastics are being repurposed into materials used within stores, including wall panelling, as well as some packaging products such as home-brand bread bags made with 30 per cent recycled content.<\/p>\n

It forms part of a broader industry effort involving major brands such as Mars, Nestl\u00e9 and McCormick Foods through Soft Plastics Stewardship Australia (SPSA), aimed at rebuilding recycling pathways following the collapse of previous schemes.<\/p>\n

Woolworths 360 Managing Director Rob McCartney said, \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled\u201d to be able to give shoppers the ability \u201cto recycle these materials again\u201d.<\/p>\n

One of the key issues with recycling soft plastics is that they can be recycled only once or twice before their quality deteriorates, limiting their reuse in the same form.<\/p>\n

Unlike rigid plastics that can be recycled more times, soft plastics, such as shopping bags, plastic wrap, and product packaging, degrade quickly during the recycling process.<\/p>\n

It means they must be carefully managed and their recycling systems continually expanded to ensure the process remains sustainable.<\/p>\n

Soft plastic recycling remains vital for reducing landfill waste and supporting the circular economy.<\/p>\n

Soft plastics account for a significant proportion of plastic waste in Australia \u2014 an estimated 538,000 tonnes annually \u2014 and without adequate recycling programs, these materials often end up in landfills, contributing to environmental damage.<\/p>\n
