South Australia has secured hosting rights for the men’s Australian Open golf tournament after weeks of uncertainty about the future of LIV Golf in Adelaide.<\/p>\n

The men’s event will be held from 2028 at the soon-to-be redeveloped North Adelaide Golf Course.<\/p>\n

It will alternate each year with the women’s Australian Open, meaning there will be at least three men’s and three women’s Opens held in Adelaide between 2028 and 2034.<\/p>\n

The exact timing of events beyond 2028 and their split with another state is yet to be determined, Golf Australia said.<\/p>\n

The men’s event has not been held in Adelaide since 1998.<\/p>\n

The South Australian government announcement on Thursday followed weeks of political pressure over the $45 million upgrade of the North Adelaide course<\/a>, which is meant to host LIV Golf in 2028.<\/p>\n

LIV Golf’s future is uncertain beyond this year after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) withdrew its funding support<\/a>, leaving LIV organisers scrambling to find new revenue sources.<\/p>\n

The doubts around LIV, which has had an Adelaide event since 2023<\/a> and was the catalyst for the government pursuing the North Adelaide course upgrade, have seen both the Greens and the Liberal Party call for a rethink on the project<\/a> due to the cost and felling of hundreds of trees<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Premier Peter Malinauskas, who on Wednesday declared “I don’t owe LIV anything”<\/a>, said the Australian Open took golf in Adelaide to “a whole new level”.<\/p>\n

“The renovation of the golf course stacks up even if you just look at it from a community perspective and a golf tourism perspective,” he said.<\/p>\n

“But clearly, having a major event improves the economic metrics quite substantially.<\/p>\n

“That’s been the plan with LIV, and now we’ve got it with the Australian Open, which is the most prestigious golf event in the country.”\"Premier<\/p>\n

Mr Malinauskas rejected suggestions that LIV Golf potentially leaving Adelaide put the government on the backfoot in negotiations with Golf Australia.<\/p>\n

“We’ve been having this negotiation with Golf Australia for some time, and none of that changed as a result of the recent news,” he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Malinauskas later revealed in parliament that “in the order of $5 million” had already been spent on the North Adelaide course upgrade.<\/p>\n

He said that cost would increase if the government stopped the project.<\/p>\n

“There would be work that has to be done to bring it back to what it was a couple of weeks ago when regular maintenance was stopped, and to undo the work that has happened only in the last fortnight,” he said.<\/p>\n

“But we now do not have to worry about that simply because we have a major event.”<\/p>\n

LIV Golf and Australian Open ‘chalk and cheese’<\/p>\n

LIV Golf’s annual event at Adelaide’s Grange Golf Club has been one of the tour’s most successful events, known for its party-like atmosphere.<\/a><\/p>\n

As LIV Golf tries to plug the funding hole left by Saudi Arabia, Peter Malinauskas says he would welcome the tour back to Adelaide, but only “if it stacks up for us”.<\/p>\n

But the Australian Open will bring a different feel, according to Australian Golf Digest managing editor Steve Keipert.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“They’re really chalk and cheese,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The Australian Open’s got more than 120 years of history behind it. LIV’s been around for four.”<\/p>\n

“They’re run a little bit differently \u2026 LIV has its shotgun start where all the players tee off at exactly the same time but just on different holes, and the Australian Open goes with the more traditional rolling start off one or two tees.<\/p>\n

“So that’s going to be different from a spectator’s perspective.”<\/p>\n

Mr Keipert said it was positive that the Australian Open would be held somewhere other than Sydney or Melbourne “where it’s largely been for 50 years”.<\/p>\n

Victoria still in the mix for future events<\/p>\n

Golf Australia chief executive James Sutherland said moving to Adelaide was about “securing the long-term future of the Australian Open” and having “certainty” about venues.<\/p>\n

He said Golf Australia remained in discussions with Victoria, which has hosted three of the last four Australian Opens.<\/p>\n

“There are rights and obligations that we have with the Victorian government; we have conversations ongoing with them about their rights to host over the coming years,” Mr Sutherland said.<\/p>\n

“We certainly hope that Victoria and the famed Melbourne Sandbelt will continue to play an important part in the future of the Australian Open.”<\/p>\n

Opposition calls for more transparency<\/p>\n

Opposition leader Ashton Hurn said she supported attracting the Australian Open “in principle” but called for more transparency over the deal.<\/p>\n

“South Australians need to know how much money the state government is forking out,” she said.<\/p>\n

“If Labor are so confident that this event is going to make a $45 million investment into the North Adelaide golf course stack up, then they should show us how.”<\/p>\n

Mr Malinauskas said details of the contract were commercial-in-confidence.<\/p>\n

“Obviously, we run our ruler over all of that,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I’m not going to say who I think got the better end of the deal, but I think it’s a good deal.”<\/p>\n

Ms Hurn rejected suggestions that releasing details of the contract could jeopardise South Australia’s capacity to host the event.<\/p>\n

“This is an event that is a roaming event; it has moved from state to state,” she said.<\/p>\n
