Pezet was suspended for one match for a hip drop in reserve grade.

It means that Ronald Volkman keeps his spot next to Mitch Moses in the halves.

Volkman has been solid enough at five-eighth, keeping Pezet out of the side last weekend.

It led to Matty Johns draw parallels to the Brown situation of last season.

“Really interesting is Ronald Volkman in the six. Jonah Pezet played NSW Cup on the weekend. I wonder if that’s got more to do with form or it’s similar to the Dylan Brown situation of last year where he (Ryles) says ‘you know what, he’s not going to be here next year’,” Johns wondered out loud on Matty and Cronk.

Ryles leaves after officiating call out | 03:28

Cronk could only chuckle when Johns said this before stating he had been surprised by Pezet’s underwhelming season so far.

“The Pezet thing is interesting because at the start of the year, and even I said it, I thought Mitch Moses was going to have a great year because of Pezet’s influence,” Cronk said.

“However, Pezet’s defence has let him down.

“If he improves his defence, he’ll be in the side. He’s a big frame and puts his body on the line and he runs over him like he’s roadkill.”

AJ announces PNG Chiefs signing | 10:45

Meanwhile, former Blues teammate Josh Addo-Carr explained the speed of the modern game has also benefited Mitchell.

As defences tire, there’s more one-on-one tackles to be made, which aren’t an issue for the rampaging centre if his effort against Ponga is anything to go by.

“The state of the game is so quick and defenders are so tired and his attacking ability, nobody has what he has,” Addo-Carr said to AAP.

“He’s on a tear at the moment but when the defensive line is tired Latrell comes alive – that’s his game.

“I’m super happy to see how happy he is, he and Souths have been through a fair bit last year and it’s awesome to see a good mate going well.”

‘Ran over Ponga like he was roadkill’ | 02:11

FORAN MAY HAVE LOST FIRST MATCH… BUT BACKED FOR TOP JOB

Sea Eagles v Broncos, Saturday 7:35pm @ 4 Pines Park

Kieran Foran may have suffered his first loss as coach last round, but he has been backed by the playing group to become the next full-time head coach of the Manly Sea Eagles.

Taking over from the sacked Anthony Seibold, Foran has given new life to the Sea Eagles and completely changed the way they have played.

Winning four straight matches against the Dolphins, Dragons, Cowboys and Eels, he came agonisingly close to helping lead the side to an upset victory over the Panthers, who are by far the best team in the NRL at the moment.

Pushing Penrith to the limits and coming within two points of taking the victory, he will now face another tough test in the Brisbane Broncos this weekend.

However, no matter the result, he should remain on as coach for next season and onwards.

NRL 2026 RD06 St. George Illawarra Dragons v Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles – Ben Trbojevic, Kieran Foran, Coach NRL PHOTOSSource: The Daily Telegraph

Asked if he would like to see Foran handed the reins of becoming the club’s next head coach (rather than just an interim), veteran Jake Trbojevic was ecstatic at the idea.

“Without doubt. The turnaround in the five weeks has been so good. I can’t believe that he played last year,” Trbojevic said on NRL 360.

“We’re playing a lot more direct. His competitiveness, his hard edge he brings to the table, everyone’s sort of buying into that and he’s a real natural at it.

“He’s had a lot of life experience and it sort of all culminates to this. The Storm have lost seven straight but a team that talented has to win one sooner or later.

Not only that, but the Tigers’ injury crisis took a further hit against Cronulla with Adam Doueihi and Samuela Fainu suffering serious injuries.

The absence of Doueihi will put more pressure on the shoulders of playmaker Jarome Luai.

Luai has been in the headlines of late after signing an historic deal with the PNG Chiefs.

Foxsports.com.au’s Paul Crawley said Luai’s announcement would have played a part in the defeat.

“I have no doubt in the world that the Jarome stuff had an effect. How could it not?” Crawley said.

“Then again, you look at the players out and that also led to the scoreline as well.”

Meanwhile, Code Sports’ Dave Riccio says that while Luai has received his plaudits, now is the time to stand up on the field.

“We have praised Jarome no end in the past week in relation to both getting the deal done with the Chiefs but also for his hand in the rebuild of the Tigers side.
