As Deadline previously reported, the newly created award will be announced every year at <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/mdag\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mdag\" data-tag=\"mdag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MDAG<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe jury for the Grand Prix was comprised of all FIPRESCI members, \u201crepresenting over 50 national sections and individual members from more than 30 additional countries,\u201d according to a release. Filmmaker Igor Bezinovi\u0107, who hails from Rijeka, Croatia, directed Fiume o morte!, which centers on an odd and significant moment in history when a paramilitary group led by Italian nationalist and poet Gabriele D\u2019Annunzio claimed the city of Fiume \u2013 now known as Rijeka, Croatia \u2013 for Italy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cBezinovi\u0107 teams up with 300 residents to create a subversive, punk-style reenactment that dismantles nationalist myths and exposes the spectacle of political performativity,\u201d notes a release.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1080\u04451920_Winner_Documentary-Grand-Prix.png\" alt=\"FIPRESCI Documentary Grand Prix\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"1820\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFIPRESCI<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Grand Prix win for Fiume o morte! must be considered a surprise, even though it won the European Film Award for Best European Documentary, along with many other prizes around the world. It qualified for Oscar consideration as Best Documentary Feature but didn\u2019t get a real campaign. Fiume o morte! won the FIPRESCI Grand Prix over much better-known films, including Oscar-shortlisted 2000 Meters to Andriivka, directed by Oscar winner Mstyslav Chernov, and Orwell: 2+2=5, directed by Raoul Peck. Mr. Nobody Against Putin, directed by David Borenstein and co-directed by Pavel Talankin, won the Oscar in March, where that film went up against The Perfect Neighbor, directed by Geeta Gandbhir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFiume o morte! will screen at MDAG on Saturday with the director present. Igor Bezinovi\u0107 was on hand for the Grand Prix announcement on the opening night of MDAG.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s amazing to be here and to see the documentary Grand Prix goes to our film,\u201d Bezinovi\u0107 told the audience. \u201cAnd especially because the occasion is very specific and very special because it\u2019s the first time that the FIPRESCI jury decided to give an award to a documentary film and to start a new tradition\u2026 I guess that in a few years\u2019 time, we\u2019ll go back and see the list of many films that will be awarded. And for us, it will always be very special [because] we were the first ones to get this award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBezinovi\u0107 also touched on the significance of the award \u2013 when what constitutes \u201cmovie reviews\u201d may be no more than someone tapping out a social media post.
