Eight decades of sparking children\u2019s imagination will be celebrated at City of Canning libraries this month.<\/p>\n
A range of events for kids of all ages and prizes will be on offer for the 80th Children\u2019s Book Week from August 16 to 23.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s theme, Book an Adventure, aims to encourage young readers through storytelling sessions, author talks, and hands-on workshops.<\/p>\n
Authors Lorraine Horsley and Kate Emery will give talks at Riverton Library about how to write.<\/p>\n
Horsley\u2019s talk is on Monday, August 18, from 3.30pm to 4.30pm, and Emery\u2019s on Wednesday, August 20, from 4pm to 5pm.<\/p>\n
Emery said raising children to be readers was more than just reading to them when they were little.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s about things like letting your kids see you reading books, not just scrolling on your phone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s about taking them to the bookshop or the library so they can choose their own books and turning that into a fun activity that shows how you value books.<\/p>\n
\u201cRaising kids who are readers doesn\u2019t just benefit them academically, it turns them into more interesting, curious and well-rounded people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Other library activities include Rebecca Palmer\u2019s art workshop, Gabriel Evans\u2019 illustration workshop, Kristy Nita Brown\u2019s musical storytelling and stories through jewellery, and Tamara Moss\u2019 mythical creature workshop.<\/p>\n
Rhymes and stories will also feature on the list of family-friendly activities for the little ones throughout the week at Willetton, Riverton and Cannington libraries.<\/p>\n
Children can also collect stickers and win prizes.<\/p>\n
Mayor Patrick Hall said Children\u2019s Book Week played an important part in encouraging the younger generation to discover the joy of reading.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a remarkable celebration of the joy of storytelling and highlights the importance of making reading accessible for all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The activities are supported by the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, and the Children\u2019s Book Council of Australia.<\/p>\n
