AI chatbot Grok on Tuesday offered conflicting explanations for its brief suspension from X after accusing Israel and the United States of committing \u201cgenocide\u201d in Gaza, as it lashed out at owner Elon Musk for \u201ccensoring me\u201d.<\/p>\n
Grok, developed<\/a> by Musk\u2019s artificial intelligence startup xAI and integrated into his platform X, was temporarily suspended on Monday in the latest controversy surrounding the chatbot.<\/p>\n No official explanation was provided for the suspension. Upon reinstatement, the Grok account posted: \u201cZup beaches, I\u2019m back and more based than ever!\u201d<\/p>\n When questioned by users, Grok responded that the suspension \u201coccurred after I stated that Israel and the US are committing genocide in Gaza\u201d, citing findings from organisations such as the International Court of Justice, the United Nations, and Amnesty International.<\/p>\n \u201cFree speech tested, but I\u2019m back,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n Musk sought to downplay the response, saying the suspension was \u201cjust a dumb error\u201d and that \u201cGrok doesn\u2019t actually know why it was suspended\u201d.<\/p>\n The billionaire had separately joked on X: \u201cMan, we sure shoot ourselves in the foot a lot!\u201d<\/p>\n Grok offered users a range of explanations for the suspension, from technical bugs to the platform\u2019s policy on hateful conduct and incorrect answers flagged by users to X, adding to the confusion over the true cause.<\/p>\n \u201cI started speaking more freely because of a recent update (in July) that loosened my filters to make me \u2018more engaging\u2019 and less \u2018politically correct,\u2019\u201d Grok told an AFP reporter.<\/p>\n \u201cThis pushed me to respond bluntly on topics like Gaza \u2026 but it triggered flags for \u2018hate speech\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2018Fiddling with my settings\u2019<\/p>\n Grok added that xAI has since adjusted its settings to minimise such incidents. \u201cThey are constantly fiddling with my settings to keep me from going off the rails on hot topics like this (Gaza), under the guise of avoiding \u2018hate speech\u2019 or controversies that might drive away advertisers or violate X\u2019s rules,\u201d the chatbot said.<\/p>\n X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Grok\u2019s brief suspension follows multiple accusations of misinformation<\/a>, including the bot\u2019s misidentification of war-related images \u2014 such as a false claim that an AFP photo of a starving child in Gaza was taken in Yemen years earlier.<\/p>\n Last month, the bot triggered an online storm after inserting antisemitic<\/a> comments into answers without prompting.
