EdNurg \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe analyzed participants\u2019 core body temperature, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/02\/health\/what-is-moon-face-heres-when-to-worry-about-cortisol\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:cortisol levels;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">cortisol levels<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/04\/health\/dont-take-melatonin-supplements-for-insomnia-sleep-doctors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:melatonin levels;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">melatonin levels<\/a>, which we know play important roles in how our bodies manage the circadian rhythm \u2014 our 24-hour cycles \u2014 which regulate things like wakefulness and sleep,\u201d said Joanne Carpenter of the University of Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhen we looked at these three measures in\u00a0young people\u00a0who presented to\u00a0mental health services, we found that 23% of patients were experiencing a kind of physiological jet lag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The peculiar findings suggest that healthcare providers should target biological clocks when treating mood disorders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mood disorders can be characterized by persistent sadness (depression), extreme happiness (mania) or a combination of both (<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/06\/11\/how-to-tell-if-your-mood-swings-could-be-bipolar-disorder\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:bipolar disorder;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">bipolar disorder<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\u201cInternal jet lag\u201d is when biological \u201cclocks are not just delayed but not lining up with each other.\u201d It could be linked to mental health disorders. The first group were 69 people aged 16 to 35 who visited a mental health clinic in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The other group of 19 young people didn\u2019t have a history of mental illness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The participants swallowed a sensor that continuously logged their body temperature.
