Genevieve Jordan came to competitive track cycling later in life than most, but she is making up for lost time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After racing for the first time on the Brunswick Velodrome just seven years ago, the 54-year-old mother of three has won two world titles for her age group and has her eyes on more next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Her achievements have earned her a place as a finalist at the Victorian Sports Awards<\/a> which will be held at the MCG on Wednesday night. She is in the running for the Masters Athlete of the Year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

She has already been named the peak body AusCycling\u2019s Masters Track Female Athlete of the Year for 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jordan initially took up track cycling in 2019 aged 47 to support her son after he joined the Brunswick Cycling Club a few years earlier.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy son was looking at starting some track cycling, and our neighbours said that they had heard about the junior clinic at Brunswick and recommended that,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I was taking him there, and just watching the sessions, as you do as a parent.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cEventually, one day, there was a come and try session. I thought, I might as well join in because I\u2019m here, and it looks kind of fun. So that\u2019s how I got into it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But while her son has given cycling away as work and study have taken priority now he is in his early-20s, Jordan kept at it, impressing judges with her speed and ability and eventually earning a spot in the Australian team for the Masters World Track Championships in France last October.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Masters are held annually for cyclists aged over 35. Jordan competed for the first time last October at Roubaix, the town in northern France where one of the world\u2019s most famous road races finishes each year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With her husband watching on from the stands, Jordan won two gold medals from three events at the world titles, including the team sprint with two younger Victorian mums, Samantha Bradbury and Emma Jackson.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jordan said her disappointment at failing to finish on the podium in her opening event, the individual time trial for women aged 50 to 54 \u2013 when she may have been a little over-awed \u2013 was motivation when it came to the team sprint.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI screwed up and came fourth and I was pretty gutted after that I must admit,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it just meant that, I think the next day, when we came up for the team sprint, I was super determined and just really had to put the previous day behind me and just ride for the girls, which was good. And it worked in the end.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The trio train regularly together with Jackson coming down to Melbourne from Castlemaine and they have formed a strong bond.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had so much fun doing that event together, and I think being part of that team made me kind of stick with it and keep training when it got hard.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes in the middle of winter and it was cold and you have your days where it\u2019s hard, but being part of a team, I think really helps make you kind of just push through and stick with it, so they were an important part of it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jordan followed up the success in the team sprint with a second gold in the women\u2019s 50-54 individual sprint after finishing fastest in the qualifying rounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While Jordan will sit out this year\u2019s World Masters Titles, she is setting her sights on competing in London in 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jordan said her development as a track cyclist just evolved naturally \u2013\u00a0\u201clike getting caught up in a wave\u201d \u2013 and when she first took up the sport she had no ambitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve got talent, I really don\u2019t,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I just keep turning up and just keep kind of chipping away and just training.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere probably was a point after my first nationals [in 2023] where I thought, Oh, this is kind of cool. You know, I can keep doing this.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was a bit of a turning point in the sense that it was my first nationals, I did get three golds and I could see that I could have some success but I also had a lot to learn, lots that I could improve upon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that\u2019s probably what gave me sort of a bit of momentum to then pick up the strength training, and then lift the level of training and intensity a little bit, I guess.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jordan said the nomination by AusCycling for the Victorian Sports Awards was a pleasant surprise but she also felt her coaches Brad Robbins and Sandra Alcorn deserved recognition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Although she lives in Rosanna, Jordan has remained a member of Brunswick Cycling Club since she began her two-wheel odyssey.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When she is not training either at the Brunswick Velodrome or at an indoor cycling centre in Thornbury, Jordan volunteers to help at the club\u2019s track meets on a regular basis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She also feels an affinity with the Brunswick club because her father grew up in the suburb and spent his youth riding a bike around the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey [Brunswick Cycling Club] have been a huge support for me, pretty much, right from the start, right from when I first jumped on a bike a few years ago,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s such a nice, inclusive community.\u201d\u00a0.\u00a0<\/p>\n
