(ABC News: Simon Farrell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said a farmer in north-west Tasmania came forward with a potato they were concerned about earlier this year, which was diagnosed with mop-top virus on July 18.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The disease was subsequently found across multiple potato varieties on that farmer&#8217;s site, but it has not been detected in any further locations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What we are doing at the moment is \u2026 working with the grower to understand where material might have moved and also how material came onto the property,&#8221; Dr Driessen said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[We will] trace forward, trace back \u2026 to find out potentially how far spread this virus might be or how limited in spread this virus might be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Risk mitigation measures have been put in place to attempt to contain the disease on the affected farm, but no wider restrictions have been placed on the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Driessen stressed the virus was a &#8220;plant pest&#8221; and that there are no risks to human health.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Early days\u2019, but growers concerned<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Leigh Elphinstone, a potato farmer on a property at Sisters Creek in north-west Tasmania, said it was too early to know what the impact on growers would be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s just early days and at the moment, it is just a small detection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But it&#8217;s just another risk that growers will have to take on in their business and manage some way or another.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a black jacket, hat and sunglasses stands and looks off-camera.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/074a927127d4a9df5a682ac8fc844dfd\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Leigh Elphinstone says the detection is a concern to potato growers. (ABC News: Georgia Hogge)<\/p>\n<p>What is potato mop-top virus?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The virus is spread by a soil-borne fungus vector called spongospora subterranea, which can cling to machinery and other materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It can cause significant yield and quality reductions in potatoes and can cause internal rust-coloured rings or arcs within the vegetable flesh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The disease&#8217;s namesake, mop-top, refers to the stunting of the foliage, one of many symptoms of potato mop-top virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Common external symptoms include cracking and raised necrotic rings and lines.
