Depending on the outcome of the next broadcast deal, Cleary could well fetch $2 million a season on the open market.<\/p>\n<p>But Cleary told this masthead he was unsure if he would allow his future to drag on that long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d said Cleary, when asked about becoming the game\u2019s most in-demand free agent. \u201cI honestly don\u2019t know, and that won\u2019t change between now and the Origin period. I\u2019m not prepared to make a decision. And I don\u2019t know why it\u2019s such a rush.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my mind, it\u2019s May, so it\u2019s still ages away. I don\u2019t even want to think about contracts through this hectic period of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Panthers officials launched <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/operation-keep-clearys-panthers-start-talks-to-tie-down-captain-and-coach-20260203-p5nz5t.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cOperation Keep Clearys\u201d<\/a> at the start of the year, aimed at tying down their coach and best player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a rhythm that exists once the season starts, and when we feel the time is right our chairman, Peter Graham, will engage with Ivan and Nathan to get the conversation started,\u201d CEO Matt Cameron told this masthead. \u201cWe\u2019d love Ivan and Nathan to stay. They have already played a huge role in our success and we want that to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Nathan Cleary celebrates his try against Canberra on Sunday,\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778532264_685_150f8bd5f78594dd9363b633e940763f7347ff67.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Nathan Cleary celebrates his try against Canberra on Sunday,Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Panthers officials on Monday confirmed they were happy to be guided by the Clearys as to when they wanted to open negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Cleary leads the Dally M leaderboard after ten rounds, and will be the first player picked for NSW when Laurie Daley puts together his side for Origin I.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday at GIO Stadium, his dropout \u2013 which travelled hard and low before breaking right and trickling into touch over the 10m line \u2013 left fans and commentators stunned<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew it was bending \u2013 I\u2019ve kicked the footy since I was two years old, so I have a fair idea of what a footy can do,\u201d Cleary said. \u201cThe ball still does some pretty incredible things. But when it spins like that, I knew it was going to turn.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t like to break it down [what I do] too much because it becomes confusing. Sometimes it\u2019s trial and error. When you kick it enough, you know where to kick it to make it bend a certain way. You practice it until you\u2019re confident to kick it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cleary said strapping on his left knee was merely precautionary, while he also taped his head to prevent cauliflower ears. There is a growing push for Roosters fullback James Tedesco to be recalled for the Origin series.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Dyl is so reliable, and there are still so many things he does that go unnoticed by the outside [world], but not from within our club,\u201d Cleary said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love playing alongside him. It\u2019s a tough one. \u2018Teddy\u2019 is playing amazing as well. Dyl is playing incredibly well.
