According to Strava, one. That may be the most useful number in the platform’s first Metro: Commute Report. The headline stat is huge: Cyclists logged 550 million miles of bike commutes on Strava in 2025, or about 22,000 trips around the earth. But the number that says more is this one: 43 percent of cyclists on Strava recorded at least one bike commute last year.

Bike commuting often gets treated like a category defined by routine and repetition. Strava’s data suggests it’s broader than that. One ride to work counts. One ride to the office after months of driving counts. One ride home on a Friday counts. A single trip is enough to move someone into the data set.

There are limits to what the report can show. It’s based on bike commute activities recorded on Strava between January and December 2025, and it excludes private activities and data from users who opted out of community features. So this is a snapshot of Strava users and logged rides, not a full picture of all bike commuting. Even so, it’s still a large sample drawn from actual recorded behavior, which gives the numbers some weight.

Related StoryWho’s Riding to Work?

The generational breakdown is one of the first places the report gets interesting. Boomers had the largest share of cyclists commuting of any generation in 2025. Gen Z was 21 percent less likely to record a bike commute than Boomers. Boomers were also the most likely generation to commute by e-bike.

That’s one of the clearer findings in the report: The commuting data skews older. And the e-bike numbers reinforce that point. Iceland led the world in e-bike commutes in 2025, followed by Belgium and Norway.

Taken together, those numbers suggest that e-bikes are helping expand who commutes and what a commute can look like. For some, that means making a longer trip manageable. For others, it means flattening hills, easing headwinds, or turning a ride to work into something more practical than punishing.

Where Weather Fits In

The weather data is just as useful. Finland led the cold-weather rankings, with 22 percent of its commute activities recorded in temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Sweden came in at 18 percent, Norway at 17 percent, and Denmark, Germany, and Austria each landed at 12 percent.

On the hot side, Japan logged 25 percent of its commutes in temperatures over 80 degrees. Brazil followed at 23 percent, while Spain, Italy, and Hungary each came in at 18 percent.

That doesn’t mean weather doesn’t matter. It does. But the report makes clear that cold and heat are not automatic barriers to bike commuting. In a wide range of climates, people are still riding to work.

Related StoryThe Routes That Matter Most

The report also points to the routes where commuting shows up most clearly. In Stockholm, nearly 77 percent of all efforts on the Västerbron up n over segment were commutes. Similar patterns showed up on the Ciclo Faria Lima corridor in São Paulo, the Queensboro Bridge climb in New York City, and the Embankment in London.

That’s a useful reminder that the most important bike routes are often the ones people use repeatedly to get somewhere. They may not be the most scenic or the most famous. But they are the routes that keep appearing in the data because they’re part of daily movement through a city.

Why the Data Matters

Strava describes Metro as a free, anonymized data set designed to help planners, governments, and infrastructure officials understand how people move. More than 4,000 partners worldwide use the data, according to the company, and Strava says nearly 1 billion people have been positively impacted as a result.

Perhaps the more interesting takeaway is that bike commuting seems to be shaped less by cycling identity than by practicality. Nearly half of cyclists on Strava logged at least one commute in 2025, which suggests this is not just a habit for a small, highly committed subset of riders. Older cyclists accounted for the largest share of commuters, e-bikes were a meaningful part of the picture, and riders were logging commutes in both cold weather and heat. The common thread is straightforward: When a route feels doable, and the bike fits the job, more people ride to work.

Natascha is an editor and writer covering health, fitness, and the ways people move through the world.
