Hinkley, who\u2019s seamlessly transitioned into a commentary role with Fox Footy, is not even 10 months removed from his final game coaching the Power. <\/p>\n
But the 13-year mentor not only has a wealth of senior-coaching nous, but experience with an expansion club in its infancy – serving as a Gold Coast assistant from 2010-12. <\/p>\n
\u201cIf I had to call it tonight, I\u2019d say that Ken Hinkley would be the inaugural coach of the Tasmania Devils,\u201d Wilson told Seven. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s not over the line, but he has been having repeated conversations with Tasmania bosses – he met with Brendon Gale and other bosses in Melbourne last week. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe has emerged in my view as favourite, as the board has ratified the list build philosophy recently.\u201d<\/p>\n
In their first two years, the Devils have a $5 million bonus fund to help attract talent to the state – which Wilson also reports is now set to \u201cbe spread over five players\u201d. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe blend of youth and experience and these franchise players that the club is going to bring in, I\u2019m told Brendon Gale and his board heavily favours Ken Hinkley,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
\u201cJohn Longmire is still very much in the frame, as is the early favourite, Nathan Buckley. <\/p>\n
On Hinkley\u2019s desire to re-enter the coaching ranks, Wilson added: \u201cI know he wants to coach again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hinkley responded to that report on SEN on Monday night. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve had chats with Brendon (Gale), but let\u2019s explain why I\u2019ve had chats,\u201d he began. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m one of the few coaches who\u2019ve actually spent three years at a start-up club, and seen the ups and downs, and what can happen if a start-up club gets it wrong. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe second part about that is they\u2019re leaning into what experience I can help them with, and I think that\u2019s worthwhile. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve spoken to \u2018Benny\u2019 because I\u2019m excited about the new team\u2019s coming into the competition \u2026 I\u2019m not committed to doing any coaching jobs anyway, at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hinkley also explained his thought process around potential roles he could perform with the Devils. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey approached me, right from the very start, about what I could offer to them in a start-up club situation – and what role would best suit me,\u201d he continued. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I can tell you exactly what I said to Benny the very first time I spoke to him: \u2018Benny, I don\u2019t know if I can do these other roles, I\u2019ve been a coach for 13 years, that\u2019s what I know I can do – I don\u2019t know about the other stuff.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not in one way saying that I\u2019m going to be a coach again, or I\u2019m not going to be a coach again. All I\u2019m saying is, right now, I\u2019ll give you every bit of advice or help that you think I can offer, to help that football club when they start up.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hinkley, a respected leader across the competition, had also been touted as an ideal prospective football boss. <\/p>\n
