Frustrated Canadian track cyclists continue to voice their displeasure and concerns on social media about Cycling Canada\u2019s recent announcement to withdraw its women\u2019s team pursuit squad from the Oct. 14 world championships in Shanghai. <\/p>\n
On Monday, Cycling Canada told CBC Sports on Monday its decision was performance-based informed by objective, evidence-based analysis. <\/p>\n
In an email to athletes and coaches obtained by Cycling Canada Magazine, the national governing body of cycle racing also cited budget constraints for cancelling the women\u2019s program. However, it will continue to support the equivalent men\u2019s program. <\/p>\n
“While difficult, it was made in the best interest of the program’s long-term success,” Cycling Canada CEO Mathieu Boucher said in an emailed statement. <\/p>\n
\u201cResults during the current Olympic cycle were not trending towards medal-winning potential. In addition, performances during competition and training did not indicate that these gaps were likely to be closed in time for the LA2028 Games.” <\/p>\n
Vancouver track cyclist Fiona Majendie considered not sharing her thoughts on social media but relented over the weekend. <\/p>\n
\u201c[It\u2019s] not something I\u2019m willing to stand for,\u201d Majendie, an alternate on the women\u2019s 2024 Olympic track cycling team in Paris, said in an Instagram post Saturday. \u201cThe Canadian women\u2019s track [cycling] team is where 100 per cent of the Olympic medals have come from in the last 30 years. <\/p>\n
\u201cSince the [2024 Paris Summer Games] the women\u2019s team [has] continued to outperform or [match] the performance of the men\u2019s team.\u201d <\/p>\n
Cycling Canada ‘taking deliberate steps’ to improve development<\/p>\n
Boucher said Cycling Canada remains committed to the development of the women\u2019s team pursuit program. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are taking deliberate steps to strengthen athlete development moving forward,\u201d said. \u201cTargeted investments, in collaboration with the cycling ecosystem, will support future growth through key opportunities, including the junior track world championships [August 2026], Apeldoorn Next Gen Track event [January 2027], Pan American Championships [February 2027], and Milton World Cup [April 2027].\u201d<\/p>\n
Ariane Bonhomme of Gatineau, Que., retired from track cycling after learning from an email message she wouldn\u2019t receive Sport Canada funding this season. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe decline of [the women\u2019s team pursuit program] has nothing to do with the strength, talent or commitment of the riders,\u201d the 31-year-old wrote Sunday on Instagram. \u201cIt has everything to do with how the program has been managed over the past several years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Clara Hughes, Canada\u2019s retired road cycling and speed skating Olympian, said she was \u201cdeeply saddened and disappointed\u201d to read about women\u2019s team pursuit and said it was a lame decision. <\/p>\n
\u201cI am sad for this group of athletes who will not have the chance to try and to live their dreams,\u201d the Winnipeg native said in responding to Majendie\u2019s remarks. \u201cWhat a massive bummer. Not necessary and inexcusable. Shame on Cycling Canada for this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hughes, who earned two individual bronze medals in road cycling at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, also feels for aspiring track cyclists dreaming to do the same. <\/p>\n
\u201cFor all the girls out there, who could possibly see this women\u2019s team try and potentially succeed and possibly fail \u2026 I am sad for them, too,\u201d the Winnipeg native said.<\/p>\n
Boucher expects Canada\u2019s world championship team in China will include a strong group of female and male athletes competing across team and individual events.<\/p>\n
Last year, Lily Plante of Sutton, Que., won national titles in the omnium, individual pursuit, and madison.<\/p>\n
Plante: ‘Lack of accountability and support’<\/p>\n
For the past six years, Plante “gave everything” she had to the Canadian track program, she shared on Instagram last Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike many others on this team, I sacrificed financially, physically, mentally, and personally to represent Canada on the international stage,\u201d said Plante, whose main goal was to qualify and compete in the madison and team pursuit events at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. \u201cI paid thousands of dollars out of pocket to race across the world, qualify spots for [world championships], and keep this program alive, because I believed in what it could become. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhat hurts the most is not just the cancellation [of the women\u2019s team pursuit program but] the lack of accountability and support that led us here.<\/p>\n
\u201cYear after year, athletes were expected to perform with minimal preparation, limited resources, and no clear long-term direction,\u201d continued Plante. \u201cWe had roughly 30 days together annually to prepare for Continental championships, Nations Cups, and world championships, while competing against nations with fully supported programs operating year-round.\u201d <\/p>\n
Boucher said he is confident in the measures Cycling Canada has implemented to ensure greater clarity, alignment, and accountability moving forward. <\/p>\n
