Members show up for the music, the movement, and the burn, but they stay for something harder to define: a sense of belonging.

Now, that community is growing.

This June, co-founders Tori and Jim Foster will open a second Barre STL location in downtown Kirkwood, marking the next step for a studio that has quietly developed one of St. Louis’ most devoted fitness followings.

But the expansion, Tori says, was never about growth for the sake of it.

“We’ve always been really intentional about how we scale,” she says. “This wasn’t about moving quickly. In recent months, Barre STL’s South City schedule has reached capacity, with waitlists becoming the norm. The Kirkwood location will nearly double class capacity, expanding from about 20 participants per class to as many as 40.

“It’s a wonderful problem to have,” Tori says. “But it also made it clear that we needed more space.”

Photography by Miranda MunguiaPhotography by Miranda MunguiaThis June, Tori and Jim Foster will open a second Barre STL location in downtown Kirkwood.

A different kind of barre

At its core, Barre STL’s method blends isometric strength training, bursts of cardio, and stretching into a full-body workout. But what sets it apart, Tori says, is both its athletic edge and its approachability.

“It’s fun, it’s effective, and it makes you feel good both inside and out,” she says.

Classes are designed to be low-impact but physically challenging, with an emphasis on endurance, mobility, and injury prevention. The studio rotates through seven different class formats, ensuring that no two sessions feel the same.

That variety helps keep members engaged, but it also supports long-term sustainability. “Sometimes fitness can feel repetitive or even boring,” Tori says. “We want people to come back excited and to keep surprising themselves.”

Just as important is the tone inside the studio. Instructors are trained in-house through a program that spans more than 100 hours, with a focus not only on technique but on communication. “We use a lot of body-affirming language that just takes the intimidation out of fitness,” she says.

Building something bigger

The emphasis on inclusivity is deeply personal for Tori, who grew up in an era when fitness culture often centered on appearance over well-being.

“It was all about earning your food or achieving a certain look,” she says. “That’s just not how we see it anymore.”

Photography by Miranda MunguiaPhotography by Miranda MunguiaThis June, Tori and Jim Foster will open a second Barre STL location in downtown Kirkwood.

At Barre STL, the goal is to reframe movement as a lifelong practice—one that supports both physical strength and mental health. Each class begins with a moment of stillness, encouraging participants to connect with their breath and leave outside stress at the door. It ends in a similar way, with time to reflect and reset.

“It’s practice,” Tori says. “Not just for this hour, but for how you show up in your life.”

It’s a philosophy that has helped curate a tightly knit community, something the Fosters say became even more important during the pandemic, when the studio first launched. While many fitness brands leaned heavily into virtual offerings, Barre STL had its eye on building an in-person space on the other side of the global trauma.

“I just knew people were going to crave connection,” Tori says. “They needed a third space. So we made one.”

The impact of that approach is still showing up in small, personal moments. Recently, a member approached Tori after class to mark her one-year anniversary at the studio.

“She told me she had been struggling with anxiety before she started coming,” Tori says. “Now she feels stronger physically and mentally, and she said she wouldn’t be in that place without the studio.”

Stories like that, Tori says, are constant reminders of why the work matters. “The community is the heartbeat of everything we do,” she says. “This expansion is possible because of them.”

What to expect in Kirkwood

The new Kirkwood space reflects the same community-first mindset, with design choices aimed at creating a welcoming, calming environment.

The studio will feature more natural light, an expanded layout, and the same warm, slightly bohemian aesthetic as the South City location, with a few elevated touches. “It feels relaxing but also energetic and fun,” Tori says.

Classes will start with a limited schedule of three to four sessions per day, gradually expanding based on demand, a strategy the Fosters have used since opening their first studio. “We really listen to our members,” she says. “That’s how we grow.”

For now, the focus is on opening the Kirkwood studio and ensuring the experience remains consistent across both locations. But long term, the Fosters see room to grow.

“I would love to continue to spread this across St. Louis,” Tori says.

Even so, that growth will remain intentional. With each new instructor requiring extensive training and each studio built around a sense of connection, expansion is less about speed and more about sustainability.

“Let’s get this one right,” Tori says. “And then we’ll go from there. We can’t wait for what’s to come.”

Over the past several years, Barre STL has built something that goes beyond a workout.
