HONDA GETS MORE ENGINE CONCESSIONS AMID POLITICAL BATTLE<\/p>\n
Struggling engine builder Honda will receive extra concessions to help recover from its disastrous start to the season.<\/p>\n
Honda is in the first year of a works partnership with Aston Martin, but its first attempt at a power unit under these regulations has been disastrous, with its motor both underpowered and unreliable.<\/p>\n
Formula 1 already has rules in place to help struggling engine builders catch up. Known as \u2018additional development and upgrades opportunities\u2019 (ADUO), an engine that is more than 2 per cent down on combustion power is entitled to one in-season upgrade, while an engine that is more than 4 per cent down on combustion power is entitled to two updates.<\/p>\n
In-season development for other manufacturers is banned.<\/p>\n
While these rules remain unchanged, testing and spending concessions have been loosened considerably.<\/p>\n
Spending concessions in the cost cap have been made more generous, with a new category for engines more than 10 per cent less powerful than the benchmark instituted. If Honda is found to be more than 10 per cent behind \u2014 as expected after the first four rounds \u2014 it will be entitled to an increased budget US$11 million (A$15.2 million), plus a one-off budget boost of US$8 million (A$11.1 million) available only this season.<\/p>\n
It will also be eligible for 230 additional test-bench hours, up from a previous maximum of 190 hours under the previous ADUO rules.<\/p>\n
The FIA will make its first assessment of engine performance after next weekend\u2019s Canadian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n
These concessions will not result in an instant performance upgrade for Honda \u2014 or for any other manufacturer found to be eligible for concessions \u2014 given engine upgrades require a significant lead time to produce.<\/p>\n
There is also a political fight brewing over possible engine rule changers for next year.
