(ABC News: Simon Farrell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Winter also said all ideas to improve the state&#8217;s budget position would be considered as part of the party&#8217;s budget roundtable process, including ideas to generate additional revenue by increasing current taxes or imposing new ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But he has refused to agree to the Greens&#8217; demand that he provide concessions up front.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;d like to sit down and discuss where we can find common ground and there are areas around housing, around budget repair, around integrity where we can work together,&#8221; Mr Winter said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But what Rosalie has effectively said, she&#8217;s issued an ultimatum, unless we do X, Y and Z then it&#8217;s a no, and I don&#8217;t think issuing ultimatums is the way to work together and no-one else on the crossbench has done the ultimatum approach either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The conversations have been really positive with the independents and the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers, that&#8217;s the kind of engagement I want to have.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It might be at the end that [the Greens] decide to back the Liberals. (ABC News: Mackenzie Heard)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A Greens spokesperson said the decision to not attend Tuesday&#8217;s meeting with Labor and crossbench MPs was also agreed to by Mr Winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was jointly acknowledged that the conversation between Labor and the Greens had not progressed far enough,&#8221; the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s hardly good faith for Mr Winter to claim otherwise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The Greens&#8217; door is still open. We hope Labor comes back to the table to negotiate tangible outcomes for the people of Tasmania.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Liberals open to compromise<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Liberal Party has already made a pair of policy compromises in a bid to win over the crossbench.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It announced it would <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-10\/tasmanian-liberals-backflip-on-native-forestry-logging-plan\/105632720\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105632720\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no longer open up to 40,000 hectares of previously protected native forest for logging<\/a>, and would <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-09\/tas-liberal-government-greyhound-racing-funding-end\/105632818\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105632818\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">end greyhound racing by 2029<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Treasurer Eric Abetz said further concessions would also be considered as part of the government&#8217;s multi-partisan budget panel, which held its first meeting on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Abetz said he made clear he&#8217;d take action to fix the state&#8217;s budget position, one of three reasons for the no-confidence motion moved in Mr Rockliff in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The government has previously rejected that the budget position, or the state&#8217;s debt \u2014 <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-25\/state-budget-pefo-treasury-debt-3billion-worse\/105459198\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105459198\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">projected by Treasury to rise to almost $13 billion by the 2027-28 financial year<\/a> \u2014 was an issue, insisting the state is on a &#8220;sensible pathway to surplus&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That was part of my introductory comment to them that I, as the new treasurer, was mindful of the fact part of the no-confidence motion that triggered the election was our approach to the budget,&#8221; Mr Abetz said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And we will learn from that and seek to do whatever we can to ensure that there&#8217;s a better budget outcome, but with the help of the house of assembly membership.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Abetz said the government would consider suggestions of new or increased taxes, despite the Liberal Party&#8217;s general opposition to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Our instinct is not to increase the tax burden on our fellow Tasmanians but that said, we have to be flexible in a parliament where we might control only 14 of the 35 seats,&#8221; Mr Abetz said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, all options were on the table but it stands to reason we have a very strong low tax proposition, that&#8217;s sort of part of the DNA of the Liberal Party.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Mr Abetz said the government would not compromise on its <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-08\/tasmanian-political-leaders-stadium-support\/105390918\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105390918\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">support of a Macquarie Point AFL stadium<\/a>, despite strong opposition from most of the crossbench.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When you get an impasse like that, you can keep arguing about it, or you simply take what I think is the mature approach and say, &#8216;right that issue we agree to disagree, done and dusted, we park it over there, what are the issues that we can talk about, that we can move forward on&#8217;,&#8221;
