(ABC News: Luke Bowden)

In the queer circles in which Lai came of age, it was understood “that romantic relationships break, but friendships are supposed to last forever, and they’re supposed to be like family, and they’re supposed to be indispensable”.

But time, she discovered, takes a toll. After five, 10, 15 years, “the day-to-day dirt of life comes in and constantly challenges the fabric of those relationships”, Lai says.

She has come to learn that “friendships are simultaneously so much more fragile and so much more precious than I thought they were”.

“I’m struck by that over and over as I figure out how to be an adult, and I wanted to write about it.”

The art of the graphic novel

Lai says she’s “shocked” a major literary prize has gone to a graphic novel, a relatively under-recognised form in Australia.

“It wasn’t so long ago that my agent was trying to pitch it,” she says.

“Most publishing houses don’t have visual acquisitions at all, or have closed their visual acquisitions, and so I’m very grateful to Giramondo for taking the risk. This is their first graphic novel since they published Blue by Pat Grant [in 2012].”

Graphic novels are costly to produce for both authors and publishers.

“The drawing of a graphic novel takes years,” Lai says.

“I can generally work at the pace of about a page a day, and then that is interrupted by any other gigs that I have to take on for money.”

The 2026 Stella Prize shortlist

A memoir by Geraldine Brooks is among the eclectic works up for one of Australia’s most prestigious literary awards.

Lai describes the twin processes of writing and illustrating as “inextricable”.

“I tend to start scripting as much as I can to get the structure sorted and all the preliminary scene-building and dialogue, and then I will start drawing it,” she says.

“And then, unlike traditional prose, you can’t edit in the same way that you can with a book, and so that creates its own challenges.

“Ideally, you write as rigorously and carefully as you can before you start drawing but ultimately, it will necessitate throwing out tens of pages.”

Lai threw out as many as 80 pages while editing Cannon. (ABC News: Luke Bowden)

In both Cannon and Stone Fruit, Lai restricted herself to writing only dialogue, a constraint that helped creatively but added another layer of difficulty to the writing process.

“When I’m trying to do essentially a psychological portrait, in this case of someone who is quite stoic and doesn’t talk very much, and I only have dialogue as my tool, that is challenging,” she says.

“I found myself really grating up against that restriction a lot in this book.”

Lai looked to other techniques to depict Cannon’s inner world, such as magical realism. In moments of emotion or stress, for example, black and white birds — symbols of “rage” and “intuition” only Cannon can see — appear in the frame.

“Even things like composition, having visual objects crowding in on a person to represent a sense of overwhelm, can be really helpful,” Lai says.

“From a reading perspective, I think it’s quite intuitive.”

The luxury of time

Since 2016, Lai has lived in Canada, where the comics scene is much larger.

“It became quite clear to me that it wasn’t going to be possible to be a cartoonist in a practical sense in Australia,” she says.

“There are a lot more commercial avenues in Canada and in the US in general to be a cartoonist.”

Although she wears many different hats, Lai says her “big romance” is with the graphic novel format.

“I love the writing process just as much as I love the drawing, and so the more I can spend time on that, the happier I am creatively.”

But so far, writing graphic novels full-time has not been an option.

“Financial necessity splits my time,” she says.

“I don’t consider books as the thing that makes the money. If they do, lovely, but the bill-paying jobs tend to be illustration gigs.”

Lai is currently working on a collaboration with two Montreal authors, H Felix Chau Bradley and Francesca Ekwuyasi.
