Don\u2019t be so quick to upload any financial statements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmovr3tbp00302aql8usi99rx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you\u2019re financially pressed, confused about money, or just want a little free help figuring out how to improve your cash flow, you may be tempted to use AI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi00013b6rllb0l1yr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But you should know how to protect yourself before chatting about your finances with any AI tool (eg, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, or Claude) so you don\u2019t allow your sensitive personal information to be inadvertently exposed to others, including some who might use it to harm you. Also, you can\u2019t count on AI to instruct you to protect your privacy \u2013 although depending on the wording of your prompt, it might.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi00023b6r2kpmqr6c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For instance, earlier this month the popular podcaster and author Mel Robbins encouraged her followers on Instagram to try AI \u2013 and specifically Microsoft Copilot \u2013 to help them get control over their money. (In her video caption, she said she\u2019d partnered with Microsoft Copilot.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi00033b6r0rtc57jy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the comments section to her post, Robbins offered a suggested prompt to use, which included the sentence: \u201cI\u2019ll share documents like bank statements, debt statements, bills, and income info when you ask.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi00043b6rk8awvhta@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Neither her post nor her prompt included recommendations to redact sensitive information. (More on why you should do that below.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1nqekj00033b6raiq8rg9n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A spokesperson for Robbins\u2019 office said in an email that Copilot offered privacy warnings once a person put in Robbins\u2019 exact prompt and shared the text of the replies they got when doing so. But when CNN used Robbins\u2019 prompt in the free version of Copilot it got slightly different replies and nothing like the privacy warning the spokesperson had shared. (When asked why, a Microsoft spokesperson said \u201cresponses will vary even when the questions are the same or similar. Copilot, like other conversational AI assistants, adapts to the flow of the conversation, tone, and context.\u201d)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi00083b6rutjgbbf1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In response to \ufeffmany followers\u2019 criticisms of her original prompt, Robbins last Friday acknowledged their concerns and thanked them for the feedback in the comments section. She also amended her suggested prompt by replacing the sentence about uploading financial statements with this one: \u201cAlways remind me to remove personal information.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000a3b6roqkkg6ty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That made a huge difference.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000b3b6r4rj0n7pf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When CNN used Robbins\u2019 amended prompt, every Copilot reply during the exchange included privacy warnings, with the first being the most extensive: \u201cFirst, a quick safety thing: Please don\u2019t share any personal information like your full name, account numbers, addresses, employer details, or anything that could identify you. If you copy numbers from a statement, remove names, account IDs, and exact dates.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000e3b6rvqlcn4v9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Indeed, your bank statement, W-2, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/08\/business\/last-minute-tax-filing-tips\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tax return<\/a>, credit card statement and other financial documents can reveal those items and more, including your phone number, email, income, debts, bank routing numbers, employee ID number, taxpayer ID number and Social Security number.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000f3b6rfty4n6jj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Uploading unredacted information like that carries several risks. \u201cThere\u2019s a chance it could be hacked, leaked or breached,\u201d said Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security, a \u201cfriendly\u201d hacker company.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000g3b6rxvahu9km@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Should that happen, you\u2019re at risk for identity theft, account takeover or someone draining your bank account, according to Tobac, who has lent her expertise to teams working on security, privacy and abuse prevention at most of the major AI providers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000h3b6rk2adux95@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Put differently, \u201cThe privacy risk comes from the fact that AI memorizes stuff,\u201d said Gang Wang, an associate computer science professor at the University of Illinois\u2019 Grainger College of Engineering.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000i3b6rqpak23ej@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For instance, he said, \u201cIf your documents are part of AI\u2019s training data \u2013 there is a risk that information will be induced by a special prompt that malicious actors might use.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000j3b6r8q0j1lth@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Or, say an AI tool accidentally leaks your credit card statement, Tobac said. \u201cAn attacker could craft a phishing message from any of the hundreds of merchants you\u2019ve made purchases from, and it would be believable because they would know the date of your purchase, the merchant\u2019s name and the amount paid.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000l3b6rsbmfw407@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Before asking for free money advice from any AI program:\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000m3b6rqkf26um4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Check the tool\u2019s latest privacy and data retention policies: They can change frequently, so don\u2019t just ask the AI tool what they are, since it may have been trained on outdated versions, Wang said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000n3b6rgjuze4nv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you\u2019re using a paid (or enterprise) version of any AI program, you\u2019ll likely have somewhat greater protections than you do using the free option, but to what degree will depend on the version you\u2019re using, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000p3b6rx7cu6nah@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Copilot users, for instance, may choose \u201cwhich types of information it remembers about you. Users can also opt out entirely,\u201d a Microsoft spokesperson said in an emailed statement. \u201cConsumers can ask Copilot to remember, update, or delete specific facts at any time.\u201d (More on its privacy controls <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/microsoft-copilot-privacy-controls-8e479f27-6eb6-48c5-8d6a-c134062e2be6#bkmk_pc2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/privacy-faq-for-microsoft-copilot-27b3a435-8dc9-4b55-9a4b-58eeb9647a7f#bkmk_mt1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/privacy\/privacystatement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here<\/a>.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000r3b6rkgflt9vo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Opt out of letting AI train on your data: You have to explicitly tell the maker of the tool that you don\u2019t want the model training on your information, Wang said. Figuring out where you can formally opt out usually isn\u2019t made obvious, he noted, so you\u2019ll need to do some searching.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000s3b6riglkes6y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sanitize any information you share: If you upload any financial statements or bills, heavily redact all personal identifying information and the specifics of transactions such as stores, locations and dates. Or, better yet, don\u2019t upload statements and just include in your prompt a list of anonymous, broad categories of expenses and estimates of what you spend monthly (e.g., housing $2,500; credit cards $1,000; transportation, $200; food $750, etc.).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000t3b6rvaglxje8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Do a gut check: Wang suggests asking, \u201cWhatever I tell AI, AI may be able to tell other people. Do I care?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmp1ii9zi000u3b6rvcioigsj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And follow your intuition, Tobac said.
