{"id":669356,"date":"2026-05-14T01:01:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T01:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/669356\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T01:01:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T01:01:13","slug":"stripped-aussie-champ-lands-title-fight-in-shock-twist-pd-off-tszyu-reacts-to-handshake-snub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/669356\/","title":{"rendered":"Stripped Aussie champ lands title fight in shock twist; \u2018p****d off\u2019 Tszyu reacts to handshake snub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is Fox Sports Australia\u2019s combat sports column Fighting Words, where we give you all the latest news and views in MMA and boxing, from Australia and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Australian superstar Jai Opetaia has agreed to terms for a US blockbuster against WBC cruiserweight champ Noel Mikaelian \u2014 with the only delay now being a \u201cdifficult\u201d Don King.<\/p>\n<p>The surprise revelation comes as Team Opetaia have also declared Saudi billionaire Turki Alalshikh ready to help bankroll \u201ca massive lawsuit\u201d aimed at reclaiming the fighter\u2019s IBF strap.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"i-amphtml-fill-content i-amphtml-replaced-content\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776909012_441_poster-fallback.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Only months after being sensationally stripped of the IBF cruiserweight title, Fighting Words can reveal Opetaia is now readying for a surprise showdown with Mikaelian, the WBC champ who has previously trained alongside Tim Tszyu. <\/p>\n<p>Watch the biggest Aussie sports &amp; the best from overseas LIVE on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? <a href=\"https:\/\/kayosports.com.au?pg=default&amp;extcamp=fsaeditoriallinkgeneric-edt-fsp-lnk-awr-grc-grc-kyo&amp;channel=fsa&amp;campaign=fsacontra&amp;voucher=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Join now and get your first month for just $1.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Opetaia\u2019s manager Mick Francis confirmed the two camps have already agreed to terms.<\/p>\n<p>The Tasman Fighters boss then added that the sole delay now surrounded Mikaelian\u2019s famed promoter, the ageing Don King, proving \u201ca little difficult\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, the proposed date is August, and Las Vegas the likely location. <\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes as Francis has also vowed to have Opetaia reinstated as IBF cruiserweight king, declaring the alternative will be a \u201cmassive lawsuit\u201d bankrolled by Alalshikh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we\u2019ll then find out who has the deeper pockets,\u201d the Aussie manager boss warned.<\/p>\n<p>Despite suggestions Opetaia was being lined up for Englishman Chris Billam-Smith next \u2014 or even pitched into a megafight with David Benavidev \u2014 Francis confirmed the WBC showdown is now just awaiting agreement from the champion\u2019s promoter, King.<\/p>\n<p>Jai Opetaia.Source: Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe deal with Mikaelian is pretty well done,\u201d he said. \u201cThe only issue we have is Don King \u2026 [laughs] who even at age 94, is still proving to be a little difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fight should\u2019ve actually been locked away weeks ago, we\u2019re just working through some last challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we\u2019ve already agreed to terms. And I\u2019d suggest the fight will be sometime around August, and most likely in the United States \u2026 we\u2019re just waiting on contracts to be signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Francis then revealed he also isn\u2019t done with the IBF, who stripped Opetaia shortly after signing on as the new poster boy of Dana White\u2019s Zuffa Boxing stable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not letting that issue slide,\u201d Francis stressed. \u201cMy prediction is Jai Opetaia will be reinstated as IBF champion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOtherwise, there is going to be a massive lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if that\u2019s the case, we\u2019ll find out who has the deeper pockets. And I think Zuffa, Dana White and Turki Alalshikh have deep pockets \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TSZYU: \u201cHE F***ING GOT ME, BRO\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tim Tszyu has admitted to being \u201cp***ed off\u201d with Errol Spence Jnr\u2019s now infamous handshake snub in Las Vegas a few weeks back \u2013 and is vowing to \u201cgo for his head\u201d in the first round of their Australian blockbuster.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Tszyu has also revealed how different, stylistically, he expects to look after recently dumping Cuban coach Pedro Diaz in favour of Australian boxing great, Jeff Fenech.<\/p>\n<p>Asked how he will fight under Fenech\u2019s guidance, and Tszyu crashes his fists together four times, grinning: \u201cLike that \u2026 action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJeff is one of the best inside fighters of all time. There\u2019s a lot to learn from him in terms of that. So this fight, stylistically, it\u2019s not going to be me running, moving. I\u2019m coming in \u2026 I\u2019m risking it all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to come in red hot. No feeling out this time around. But I\u2019ve always had this thing against Errol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JUSTIS HUNI IN LINE FOR ASHES BLOCKBUSTER<\/p>\n<p>Australian heavyweight Justis Huni looks set to headline an Australian pay-per-view event in August, and potentially in a massive Ashes showdown against Englishman Richard Riakporhe.<\/p>\n<p>This column can also reveal Huni has agreed to at least two more fights with Eddie Hearn\u2019s Matchroom Boxing, with a win in August then guaranteeing a spot on the undercard of Tyson Fury versus Anthony Joshua at the back end of this year.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with Fox Sports Australia earlier this month, Hearn tossed up a host of big names for Huni next up, including Deontay Wilder, Jarrell Miller and Derek Chisora.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s understood Huni would instead prefer to punch back into the world rankings against Riakporhe, who sits No.10 with the WBC and No.11 with the IBF after previously campaigning as a cruiserweight. <\/p>\n<p>Justis Hun.Source: Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>PARO WON\u2019T BE BULLIED<\/p>\n<p>Liam Paro says he expects Lewis Crocker to come forward and try to bully him when the pair clash for the IBF welterweight crown on June 24 in Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p>Crocker, who remains undefeated and will be fighting outside the UK for the first time, has repeatedly claimed he will be the \u201cbigger man\u201d in the showdown with the Queenslander.<\/p>\n<p>But Paro, a former world champion at super lightweight, insists he will be more than ready for whatever the Belfast fighter brings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard him say in interviews that he\u2019ll be the bigger man, which gives me the feeling he\u2019s going to try and walk through me,\u201d Paro says. \u201cIf anybody says they\u2019re the bigger guy, that\u2019s usually what they\u2019re going to try and do \u2013 bully the so-called smaller fighter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paro made it clear he has no issue if Crocker chooses that path.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI welcome it,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ll walk him onto punches all night long until he can\u2019t take them anymore. But if he wants to box off the back foot, we\u2019re ready for that as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liam ParoSource: Supplied<\/p>\n<p>TEAM OPETAIA SLAM \u201cBULLS****\u201d BENAVIDEZ CLAIM<\/p>\n<p>Back on Opetaia, and his team have also taken aim at longtime American promoter Sampson Lewkowicz \u2013 the same man who Tim Tszyu once branded a \u201cweasel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on The Punch Podcast this week, Lewkowicz suggested there is no chance of his superstar client David Benavidez ever throwing down with Opetaia, given the big punching Aussie has been stripped of the IBF crown.<\/p>\n<p>While Benavidez claimed two cruiserweight straps against Gilberto \u201cZurdo\u201d Ramirez last weekend, and urged Dana White to make the Opetaia fight, Lewkowicz dismissed the idea before taking a shot at Australia\u2019s cruiserweight king.<\/p>\n<p>Dubois v Wardley Fight Highlights | 02:56<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lost the belt for money,\u201d the promoter said of Opetaia. \u201cSo now let him keep the money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made a very bad decision and the people surrounding him didn\u2019t have the patience to look for the best for their fighter. Money isn\u2019t everything for a fighter. The belt is everything \u2026 [and] he means nothing without the belt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To which Team Opetaia says what?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s absolute bulls****,\u201d manager Mick Francis fired. \u201cEveryone knows Jai Opetaia is fighting for belts, for legacy \u2013 and not money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBenavidez says he will fight Jai Opetaia, then looks for every reason why it doesn\u2019t suit. I\u2019ve heard he wants a fight with Dmitry Bivol but I\u2019m not sure that happens. So maybe be the end of the year, when there is nothing else, he takes the fight \u2013 because the offer is already on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MAN WHO FOUND PACQUIAO SIGNS AUSSIE<\/p>\n<p>In an interesting aside to The Punch Podcast\u2019s Lewkowicz interview, the man famed for helping discover a young Manny Pacquiao confirmed he\u2019s now guiding hyped Queensland prospect Cooper O\u2019Connell.<\/p>\n<p>Undefeated in four fights, the 19-year-old son of Australia\u2019s longtime fight queen Shannon O\u2019Connell has been declared a potential world champion by Lewkowicz \u2013 who now has the teenage southpaw living and training fulltime in Las Vegas. <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the promoter also suggested he would be willing to have another of his star clients, Sebastian Fundora, fight the winner of Tszyu-Spence.<\/p>\n<p>Tszyu, of course, has already twice fought The Towering Inferno, and lost both times. <\/p>\n<p>LOMACHENKO RETURNING FOR \u2018BIG FIGHT\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Boxing superstar Vasiliy Lomachenko is reportedly returning to the ring later this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian maestro, who is considered by many to be the greatest amateur boxer in history, announced his retirement in June last year.<\/p>\n<p>However, according to Mike Coppinger of The Ring, Lomachenko is preparing a comeback and will target \u201cbig fights\u201d rather than tune-ups, following the expiry of his deal with Top Rank.<\/p>\n<p>The former world champion\u2019s most recent bout came against Australia\u2019s George Kambosos Jr. in May 2024, where he claimed a dominant win.<\/p>\n<p>JDM BREAKS HIS SILENCE<\/p>\n<p>West Aussie UFC star Jack Della Maddalena has broken his silence for the first time since suffering a brutal loss to Carlos Prates in Perth \u2013 and he\u2019s looking at the positives.<\/p>\n<p>The former welterweight champ was stopped in the third round by the dangerous Brazilian striker in a result that stunned many fight fans.<\/p>\n<p>Now, for the first time in his pro career, Della finds himself on a two-fight skid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks for all the love and support,\u201d he wrote on Instagram. \u201cI could not be prouder to represent my gym @scrappy_mma_and_fitness, my family, my city and country. <\/p>\n<p>UFC Perth Wrap: Prates schools JDM | 02:59<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the desired result this time around but it was in line with the desired challenge;
