{"id":669444,"date":"2026-05-14T01:58:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T01:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/669444\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T01:58:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T01:58:14","slug":"kanaloa-says-talanoa-underway-with-moana-pasifika-owners-and-nz-rugby-over-rescue-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/669444\/","title":{"rendered":"Kanaloa says talanoa underway with Moana Pasifika owners and NZ Rugby over rescue bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">The Kanaloa Rugby Consortium says it has now had \u201creally good traction\u201d in talks with both <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noindex nofollow noopener\" class=\"underline\" href=\"https:\/\/pmn.co.nz\/read\/sports\/don-t-give-up-moana-pasifika-ceo-opens-door-to-rescue-as-new-interest-emerges\">Moana Pasifika\u2019s owners, the Pasifika Medical Association (PMA)<\/a>, and New Zealand Rugby as it pushes forward with a renewed bid to be involved with the Super Rugby franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Speaking on Pacific Mornings with William Terite, Kanaloa CEO Tracy Atiga said discussions with key parties had progressed in recent weeks with a proposal due to be submitted to New Zealand Rugby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had some really good traction with New Zealand Rugby and also with PMA, which is incredible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">She said the group was now working through the process ahead of a formal submission deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cWe\u2019re just slowly going through that process with them now and hopefully have something that\u2019s a little bit more tangible and viable for a proposal that\u2019s due tomorrow to New Zealand Rugby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Atiga\u2019s comments on Thursday follow a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noindex nofollow noopener\" class=\"underline\" href=\"https:\/\/pmn.co.nz\/read\/sports\/rejected-rescue-bid-pasifika-group-says-it-had-the-money-to-save-moana-pasifika\">previous interview<\/a> with Terite where she said the consortium\u2019s offer to support or acquire the franchise had been rejected last year by Moana Pasifika\u2019s ownership group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Watch Kanaloa Rugby&#8217;s earlier interview with William Terite on Pacific Mornings below.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">This time, she suggested the relationship between the parties had shifted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had some really great, robust conversations,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s been good, it\u2019s been positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noindex nofollow noopener\" class=\"underline\" href=\"https:\/\/pmn.co.nz\/read\/sports\/moana-running-out-of-answers-after-another-heavy-hurricanes-defeat\">Moana Pasifika<\/a> is owned by the Pasifika Medical Association and backed by New Zealand Rugby. Photo\/Photosport\/Brett Phibbs<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Atiga said the consortium believed it now had funding ready and had cleared earlier misunderstandings about its financial position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cWe\u2019re really excited now that they understand that there is definitely funds available and ready to go,\u201d she said. \u201cI think that\u2019s been the turning point for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">She also confirmed the group was aware it was not the only party interested in the franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cWe\u2019re not in this race alone. There are probably other groups. Photo\/Photosport<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">\u201cWe have the endorsement of four rugby unions across the Pacific already.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">She added that the proposal would focus on keeping the team operating but improving its financial and engagement model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Atiga said Kanaloa understood that the successful bidder would likely need to take over the existing Moana Pasifika model \u201con an as-is level\u201d, despite the fact the current model \u201chasn\u2019t been working\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-6 lg:text-xl lg:leading-6\">Atiga said funding would come from a mix of investment and digital revenue streams.
