In a new, just-released clip from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert<\/a>, the Foo Fighters<\/a> deliver a bit of d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu\u2014revisiting songs tied to meaningful moments from the show\u2019s earlier incarnation, Late Show with David Letterman<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As a treat for Colbert\u2019s audience, the band played a mini-concert during their May 4 appearance. Two of the songs came from their new album Your Favorite Toy: \u201cCaught in the Echo,\u201d which aired on that night\u2019s broadcast, and \u201cWindow,\u201d released later as a web exclusive.<\/p>\n

In remarks cut from his televised interview, Dave Grohl<\/a> reflected on how much late-night television meant to him growing up, recalling nights spent watching The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Night with David Letterman on a tiny black-and-white TV in his room.<\/p>\n

Grohl also spoke about late night\u2019s role as a platform for social commentary\u2014and why it\u2019s worth protecting.<\/p>\n

The Late Show itself holds particular significance for Foo Fighters\u2014something the band nodded to at the end of their set with a medley of \u201cThis Is a Call\u201d and \u201cEverlong,\u201d featured in the newly released clip (which you can watch at the top of this post). The songs effectively bookend their nearly two dozen appearances on Letterman\u2019s Late Show, beginning with their August 14, 1995 debut<\/a>\u2014which also marked their first-ever late-night TV performance.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s \u201cEverlong\u201d that became most closely associated with Letterman. After debuting the song during a 1997 appearance<\/a>, the band famously paused their international Sonic Highways tour to perform it again at Letterman\u2019s request<\/a> when he returned from open-heart surgery in 2000.<\/p>\n

They would go on to play \u201cEverlong\u201d three more times on the show, including during Letterman\u2019s final episode on May 20, 2015, where it was paired with a montage of highlights from his 33-year late-night run. That night, Letterman introduced the Foo Fighters as \u201cmy favorite band, playing my favorite song.\u201d<\/p>\n
