Photo by Robert Cianflone/Getty ImagesSource: Getty Images

Asked about Peake’s credentials while speaking to reporters on Monday, chief selector George Bailey responded: “To be perfectly honest, everything’s impressive with Peakey.

“For a young man of his age, and what he’s been able to do so far in his career, he’s spent a little bit of time around the national team in Sri Lanka, he’s performed well domestically.

“It’s clearly an eye for the future with his selection … there’s obviously ability there, but coupled with a really, really strong game sense and game awareness for someone of his age and experience.”

Cricket’s in Peake’s blood, with his father also representing Victoria and leading the Australian Under-19 team during his playing days. Clinton Peake, who played nine first-class matches for the Bushrangers, still holds the record for the highest individual score in a Youth Test, cracking an unbeaten 304 against the India under-19 at the MCG in 1995.

And Rogers believes Clinton’s experience and knowledge of the game has rubbed off on Oliver.

17-year-old Clinton Peake in 1995.Source: News Corp Australia

“It’s quiet extreme, his (cricket) IQ,” Rogers said of the junior Peake.

“His dad played for Victoria, but obviously that IQ has been passed down.

“He brings something altogether different to the table.

“He’s showing that he has that nous to problem-solve and figure out where he needs to get to.

“And when you talk to him, it’s different to talking to other 19-year-old kids.”

After a career-ending leg injury ruined his dream of becoming a footballer, Peake shifted his focus towards cricket, making his first-grade debut for Geelong aged 16 and scoring 420 runs at 105.00 during his maiden season for the club.

In 2024, Peake was named a non-travelling reserve for Australia’s Under-19 World Cup campaign in South Africa, but received a last-minute call-up following a broken finger to West Australian Corey Wasley. The eleventh-hour SOS paid dividends when Peake, the youngest player of the squad, contributed an unbeaten 49 in the semi-final and 46 not out in the decider against India, helping Australia secure its fourth Under-19 World Cup title.

Oliver Peake and Sam Konstas after winning the Under-19 World Cup. I found most value just talking to people, having dinner, and that was really beneficial.”

After returning from Sri Lanka, Peake made his Sheffield Shield debut against Western Australia in Perth in March 2025, receiving Victorian first-class cap No. 879 – his father was cap No. 766. He top-scored for the tourists in the first innings, a 168-ball 52 that demonstrated he was more than ready for the challenges of men’s cricket.

“We felt this is a guy that could go all the way, so let’s give him the opportunity and see what he’s made of … and he took to it like a duck to water,” Rogers said at the time.

“To come in at 2-5, under that pressure and against Joel Paris, that’s as hard as it gets.

“He just let the ball come to him, and he played a bit of a style that you don’t see as often anymore, just because guys are a bit more attuned to a T20 style of batting.

“Ollie has everything he needs to succeed.”

Oliver Peake of Victoria receives his maiden cap. Photo by Daniel Carson/Getty ImagesSource: Getty Images

Rogers also compared Peake’s batting style to that of one of his former teammates.

“Langer’s not a bad (comparison) in terms of letting the ball come,” he said.

“He scores square of the wicket, unflustered, and a little fighter.”

Later that year, the national selectors sent Peake to Chennai’s MRF Academy to help the left-hander become more accustomed to the subcontinent’s unique conditions, no doubt with half an eye on the 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign in India.

Soon after, the teenager earned his maiden Australia A call-up, cracking fifties in one-day and red-ball matches against Sri Lanka A in Darwin.

In October last year, Peake produced what is widely considered his finest Sheffield Shield performance, hitting an unbeaten 70 to help Victoria chase an awkward 230-run target against reigning champions South Australia on a spinning deck at Adelaide Oval.

“We were 6-138, and he got 70 on a spinning wicket and got it done,” Rogers recalled.

“It’s incredible how he problem-solved his way through that.

“It’s those moments he seems to be able to step up to.”

However, his red-ball form dipped as the season progressed, finishing the summer with 323 runs at 23.07. He scored 28 and 4 in the final against South Australia, which Victoria lost by 56 runs.

Oliver Peake of the Renegades. Photo by Daniel Pockett/Getty ImagesSource: Getty Images

In his second T20 match, Peake pummelled a 29-ball 59 during the Renegades’ BBL season opener against the Brisbane Heat in Geelong, clearing the boundary rope on three occasions. Having previously described himself as a “skinny and small kid”, his pre-season focus on strength and conditioning was starting to pay dividends.

A few weeks later, Peake smacked a final-ball six in prime time to seal a dramatic win for the Renegades at Perth Stadium, silencing 30,000 parochial Scorchers supporters in the stands.

“It’s what you dream of in the nets, in the backyard,” he told Fox Cricket after the match.

Less than 90 minutes after hitting the winning runs, Peake arrived at Perth Airport ahead of a flight to Africa, preparing to lead Australia at another edition of the Under-19 World Cup. The skipper led from the front during the tournament by cracking consecutive hundreds, a rapid 109 against the West Indies in the group stage and an 88-ball 100 against England in the semi-final, albeit in a losing cause.

Peake recently signed his maiden Major League Cricket deal with the San Francisco Unicorns, while this week’s announcement of his looming ODI debut will no doubt attract further attention from overseas franchises.

And should the national selectors want to blood the next generation of Australian cricketers ahead of a gruelling 2026/27 summer, headlined by up to 21 Tests across 12 months, Peake is a smokey to earn a maiden Test call-up for August’s two-match series against Bangladesh in the Top End.

Ollie Peake of Australia celebrates his century. Photo by Ashley Allen-ICC/ICC via Getty ImagesSource: News Corp Australia

Following Khawaja’s retirement and Travis Head’s promotion to opener – coinciding with Cameron Green’s fluctuating red-ball form – there are currently vacancies in the Australian Test side’s middle order.

Even if Bailey and his comrades decide it’s too soon to inject some young blood into the Test set-up, Peake’s rapid trajectory would suggest he’s a candidate to replace Smith at No. 4 whenever the champion batter decides to hang up the boots.

Australia’s three-match ODI tour of Pakistan commences in Rawalpindi on May 30.

With no professional hundreds to his name and only six List A matches under his belt, you’d be…

[564
64,63,740,85
post-671213","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-cricket","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-cricket","tag-sports
["GET
