(Google Maps)<\/p>\n<p>Permanent GP would be &#8216;awesome&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The clinic does have a regular visiting GP, Greg Booth, with whom Jamie has a strong relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I get along with him very good,&#8221; Jamie said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Very funny. Very smart. Switched on. He&#8217;s all there. (ABC News: Sandy Powell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ochre has made an offer to a new doctor and hoped to make an official announcement in the coming weeks, but the company had been in this position before.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-22\/regional-remote-gp-shortage-bidding-war\/104837214\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The &#8216;bidding war&#8217; for Australia&#8217;s doctors<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">As demand for healthcare outstrips supply, some country towns have been offering huge incentives to attract doctors but other shires have raised concerns about being unable to retain or attract GPs because they can&#8217;t afford it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve had quite a bit of interest in Strahan, but it&#8217;s the logistics of the moving here from far away,&#8221; Ms Rumbold said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We had one doctor who came and signed on permanently, and lasted one week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was just too much for him. He didn&#8217;t realise how isolating it was going to be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Rumbold said it was not just about the doctor, but possibly their family and what they needed in terms of schooling and work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We want to make something work for the community, and we want to make something work for any potential GP,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To come out rural and pretty much be a solo doctor in a practice with no other collegiate GPs around them, it&#8217;s a really big ask for someone.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"View of Strahan town on river.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2ec841d909ab34a617e8d2e1eb99b9db.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Fewer than 700 people live in Strahan, according to the most recent census data. (Supplied: Strahan Village)<\/p>\n<p>Situation not unique<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The lack of a permanent GP in places like Strahan means patients like Jamie are missing out on what the health sector calls &#8220;continuity of care&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Toby Gardner, chair of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Tasmania, said that the concept was essential to good healthcare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We know the best care that you get from your doctor is with one who knows you and who has followed your journey all the way through,&#8221; Dr Gardner said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seeing locums come in to fill gaps is great for emergency care, but doesn&#8217;t provide that long-term continuity that we need.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man in collared shirt in doctor's office\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6403696a0478c3a0d673c55693a21cd5.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Toby Gardner says continuity of care is essential to good healthcare. (ABC News: Jonny McNee)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the situation is not unique to Strahan, or even rural Tasmania.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2024, the federal Department of Health estimated the country was short about 2,400 GPs, and that number would grow to 8,900 by 2048, disproportionately <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-01-22\/regional-remote-gp-shortage-bidding-war\/104837214\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104837214\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">affecting rural and regional areas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Gardner said those areas that once had dedicated long-serving GPs had struggled to replace them as they retired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said that was in part because younger doctors rightly had a greater focus on a work-life balance and flexibility in their careers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People don&#8217;t want to work seven days a week on call,&#8221;  he said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A doctor using a stethoscope on a patient.\u00a0\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/6bbfa55a1abcac16a64a8c05b84913b1.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Toby Gardner says long-serving GPs are hard to replace. We can&#8217;t replace some of these giants of rural medicine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But, he said, that was simply reflective of broader changes occurring in many workplaces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We&#8217;re seeing that in every industry \u2026 with changes in how people work, with people working from home and really wanting diversity in their careers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Government funding provided<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Improving GP access for Tasmanians was a central promise of both the Liberal and Labor parties at the 2025 state election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tasmanian Labor promised &#8220;TassieDoc&#8221;, a program to create government-run bulk-billing GP clinics around the state, a pledge that the Liberal Party quickly matched.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last weekend, Tasmanian Health Minister Bridget Archer announced Ochre Health would be supported to expand its bulk-billed operating hours at west coast practices.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bridget Archer looks concerned behind Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/63bb216de48ddc4c44aa4c6071947bd9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Bridget Archer estimates the expansion of TassieDoc services on the west coast will provide an extra 20,000 bulk-billed visits a year.
