In April, NASA’s Artemis II astronauts ventured near the moon and returned some stunning new photos<\/a> of our closest celestial neighbor.<\/p>\n

Now, the moon is about to have more company for one night in May, and skygazers should easily be able to see it.<\/p>\n

Venus will join the moon May 18 in a cosmic event known as a conjunction<\/a>. The meet-up presents spectators with a rare opportunity to\u00a0see a phenomenon in which at least two celestial<\/a> bodies appear\u00a0from our vantage on Earth to be near one another.<\/p>\n

The conjunction, which will be widely visible across the U.S. and around the world, is the latest time that Venus and the moon have had a rendezvous in Earth’s sky. Venus, which in March appeared with Saturn<\/a>, also formed a conjunction with the moon in September<\/a>.<\/p>\n

NASA released thousands of new photos taken during the Artemis II mission around the moon. The astronauts selected for the mission thoroughly documented the 10-day voyage, which included an April 6 lunar flyby as they traveled more than a quarter-million miles from Earth.<\/p>\n

Here’s everything to know about the upcoming moon and Venus conjunction, including the lunar phase and a cloud forecast.<\/p>\n

What is a conjunction?\"The<\/p>\n

The crescent Moon joins the planets Mercury, Venus, Uranus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn in alignment in 2022 over Melbourne Beach in Florida.<\/p>\n

A conjunction is an astronomical event in which at least two planets<\/a> \u2013 or, in this case, a planet and a moon \u2013 appear to our vantage from Earth to be close together in the sky.<\/p>\n

Even though the planets are in reality still tens of millions \u2013 or even billions \u2013 of miles apart, the events present a special opportunity for astronomers and casual stargazers to see multiple worlds in our solar system at one time.<\/p>\n

So, what causes conjunctions to take place?<\/p>\n

As planets in our solar system orbit the sun at varying speeds, sometimes their orbital paths bring them close together on the same side of the sun. When this event lines up with our view from Earth, we get a conjunction, according to the nonprofit\u00a0Planetary Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The moon and Venus are due to have a cosmic meetup that should be visible Monday, May 18, to us here on Earth,\u00a0 NASA said in a monthly skywatching guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those who look up that night have not only a chance at seeing Venus \u2013 one of the brightest objects in the sky, after the sun \u2013 but a crescent moon that is just bright enough to be seen without stealing the show.<\/p>\n

How full will the moon be? What to know about lunar phase<\/p>\n

By May 18, the moon will be just about 5% full and in a waxing crescent phase, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac<\/a>. That means just a thing silver sliver of Earth’s only natural satellite will be illuminated as most of its near-facing side faces away from our planet, NASA explains<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The crew of Artemis II captured a breathtaking image of a celestial event known as an “Earthset,” in which the Earth dropped below the lunar horizon. The image is reminiscent of the iconic “Earthrise” photo that NASA astronaut Bill Anders captured in 1968 during the Apollo 8 mission that showed our planet rising on the lunar horizon.<\/p>\n

Will cloudy weather spoil the conjunction? What to know about forecast<\/p>\n

Of course, clouds in the sky could also hamper the view.<\/p>\n

The National Weather Service\u00a0shared a graphic<\/a>\u00a0showing cloud cover on the night of Monday, May 18, when the conjunction would be seen.<\/p>\n

Blue shading indicates clear skies, while the grayer the shading and higher the percentage numbers, the higher the chance for clouds.<\/p>\n

Where, how can you see celestial conjunction in May? Tips<\/p>\n

For those in the Northern Hemisphere, which includes the U.S., spotting the conjunction shouldn’t prove too difficult.<\/p>\n
