They spoke daily and Betts attended Magpies training sessions.

“When the stuff with Bobby was happening, we had (Collingwood development coach) Neville Jetta down there as well, talking and helping,” Betts told foxfooty.com.au.

“I said if you need any help, let me know and I’ll come go in to bat for you. The club rang and asked if I could have a yarn.

“I just wanted to have a yarn with Bob and see how he is, how he’s going and if there’s anything I can do. I’ll talk to ‘Fly’ (Collingwood coach Craig McRae), I’ll talk to Charlie Gardiner (Collingwood footy boss).

“But it was more about talking to Bob: ‘How you going this week? How’s training been? If you get back and train, you’re almost there, just keep going. Get to the next session.’

“Little things like that.”

Eddie Betts at Collingwood training with Bobby Hill (Photo by Michael Willson/AFL Photos via Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

Hill has been back playing VFL in recent weeks as he builds towards his long-awaited AFL return, having not featured at senior level since Round 21 last year.

But while Sir Doug Nicholls Round has kicked off this week, the 26-year old’s comeback has been put on hold for now after he was granted leave ahead of the birth of his third child.

Betts last made contact with Hill at a training session earlier this year.

It’s not the first Indigenous player that Betts has helped in something he wears like a badge of honour as a leader in the space.

Betts was crucial mentor for Tyson Stengle at Geelong and also tried to help Jamarra Ugle-Hagan during his struggles.

“I don’t what’s going to happen, if Bobby gets back, or not. But I’m hoping he does, because they need him. Hopefully he can get back,” Betts added.

“It’s not just Bobby, I feel like I want to help. That’s the reason I stepped away from Geelong in 2022.

“I want to help all the Indigenous kids that are playing in the AFL.

“If they are having any issues, I want them to feel safe that they can call me and I will be happy to go in and bat for them and help them in any way I can.”

Betts departed his coaching role at the Cats after the 2022 premiership to focus on the Eddie Betts Foundation.

Established in 2023 by Betts and his wife, Anna Scullie, it’s a non-for-profit organisation that supports young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to pursue their sporting dreams.

Eddie Betts and his wife, Anna Scullie (Photo by Josh Chadwick/AFL Photos via Getty Images)Source: FOX SPORTS

“The ideas behind the foundation is what I’ve always been passionate about when I was playing AFL footy. I want young Indigenous kids to have long, lasting careers,” Betts said.

“When I was at Carlton, we looked after Jeff Garlett and Chris Yarran. Then in Adelaide, we had Tyson Stengle, Charlie Cameron, Cam Ellis-Yolmen and all these other Indigenous boys.

“Our house became an open house for them to come back, relax and chill. We just wanted them to feel at home and safe. That became our passion.

“Then we wondered how we could expand it and grow it further. That’s when we decided to start the foundation. To help these young kids in community chase their dreams and set them up for life.

“Teaching them good habits along the way when they’re wanting to make AFL footy. Giving them the opportunity, platform and tools around them to succeed.

“Education, sport, leadership, whatever it is. That’s my passion now and what keeps me going.”

WHY BRADLEY HILL-ROSS LYON SCENARIO WAS ‘FANTASTIC’

While Betts says Sir Doug Nicholls Round is “a great round to celebrate our people and culture,” he still thinks we can be doing more and that “it should be celebrated all year round.”

But he thinks the way the Bradley Hill-Ross Lyon scenario was handled was a “fantastic” sign of improvement.

“How Bradley spoke to Ross about: ‘We don’t like to be spoken to like this. Us brothers, we’re family, this is my safety. Yes, St Kilda Football Club is our family and our team and we’ll do everything for it. But the boys are a family within a family’,” Betts said.

“I think it’s better, but you don’t know what you don’t know.

“Ross Lyon didn’t know he was affecting the boys when he said that. And Ross Lyon has a great relationships with a lot of Aboriginal players and a lot of Aboriginal people within communities.

“For Bradley to be brave enough and step up and have that conversation, and for Ross to take responsibility and listen and learn and say: ‘OK, I apologise, I didn’t know it was affecting you. I will grow from this’. That was fantastic.

“I think that’s how it needs to be handled.”

Ross Lyon and Bradley Hill (Photo by Robert Cianflone/Getty Images)Source: FOX SPORTS

Though Betts did question if younger Indigenous players would be “brave enough” to stand up to a senior coach the way Hill did.

“Do they have someone, like Bradley Hill, in their side that would stand up for them and go in to bat?,” he added.

“I was always that older figure that would go and use my position and stand up and back in all the boys.”

‘TOUGH’ REALITY BEHIND DECLINING NUMBERS

It comes during a significant decline of First Nations players on AFL club lists.

A record total of 87 Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander players were on AFL club lists in 2020, but that number has fallen to 62 this year.

The league has put measures in place to try and address it including a First Nations Impact Fund and formed a subcommittee.

There’s also talk of bringing in an extra rookie list spot for each club specially for Indigenous players, as well as greater focus on developing First Nations coaches.

‘Are we clear?!’ – Dimma goes OFF | 01:37

Betts says it’s “tough” for young Indigenous kids in communities that haven’t had the same pathway opportunities as others.

“The AFL world is tough. They’re coming from remote communities to big cities like Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide, it’s a completely different world. The AFL world is another level,” he said.

“These kids need to be in the same pathways as non-Indigenous kids, to succeed and to be seen. Given that opportunity to be in the Coates League, to be playing at the highest level.

“They have so much talent but the hard work needs to come with that.

“It’s hard because the other kids have been in the system for so long, for three or four years. Running 2km time trials, doing the beep test, doing everything they do at the draft camp. Preparing themselves like men to be drafted.

“And look at two years ago — over 70 per cent of kids got drafted from private schools. What hope do these young Indigenous kids from community have of being drafted? They have no hope.

“That’s what we’re dong in the foundation at the moment and that’s why it exists. Trying to give these young Indigenous kids the opportunity at the age of 15. Telling them what it takes to get there, this is what you need to do, these are the habits you have to have.”

CHALLENGES WITH A 20TH CLUB IN DARWIN

With Tasmania set to join the competition as the 19th club in 2028, talk around a 20th side is the natural next step.

Darwin, where Gold Coast currently plays home games, has been touted as a potential option, given the city’s rich football ties.

It’s produced greats such as Andrew McLeod, Michael Long and Cyril Rioli, as well as current stars Daniel Rioli and Zac Bailey.

Cats get Grand Final payback | 03:21

While Betts thinks Darwin can be the host of a 20th AFL club, he said the Northern Territory is “under-resourced” and “needs more funding”.

“I’ve spent two years up in Darwin playing and my kids spent time there. Looking at the juniors coming through, there’s so much talent up there,” Betts sad.

“But the AFL has to invest in the communities up there and the local footy, like what they do with Tasmania. The AFL has spent so much money in Tassie, investing in the pathways and the kids coming through.

“That’s what they need to do with the NT, as well. Invest up there.

“Because there’s more Cyril Riolis up there, there’s more Daniel Riolis. We want more Buddy Franklins.
