Ale is used to watching neighbors do double takes as they pass her yard. The nature lover, who runs The Curious Nook<\/a>, an urban food homestead, often hears worried passersby screaming warnings out of their windows.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople yell out of their car, \u2018Ma\u2019am, you have a bear in your backyard!\u2019\u201d Ale said in a video for The Dodo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But Ale knows she has nothing to fear. The animal in her yard isn\u2019t a bear \u2014 he\u2019s a lovable Newfoundland pup named Napoleon.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s such a gentle giant,\u201d Ale said.<\/p>\n

Ale adopted Napoleon when he was 9 weeks old, and the pair have been inseparable ever since. When Ale got pregnant, Napoleon stayed right by her side.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy pregnancy wasn\u2019t easy,\u201d Ale said. \u201cI had vertigo in the beginning, and he was there as a support for me to lean against.\u201d<\/p>\n

During her pregnancy, Ale was blindsided by depression. Everyone around her was excited for the new baby, and Ale struggled to share in their joy. Throughout this time, she often walked Napoleon along the cliffs near their home. On one occasion, Napoleon did something spectacular \u2014 he saved Ale\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy thoughts were really dark, and I couldn\u2019t get out of it,\u201d Ale said. \u201cOne day, I got too close to the cliff\u2019s edge. He pulled my arm backwards to a bench where we always rested and laid his head on my lap, and I just sat there petting him, and I cried.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, Ale is doing a lot better. Her son is 3 years old, and Napoleon is now his protector, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the baby would cry at night, he would pop up immediately, like, \u2018What\u2019s going on with my baby?!\u2019\u201d Ale said.<\/p>\n

Ale is so grateful to have a best friend like Napoleon, and she doesn\u2019t know what she\u2019d do without him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe really is an angel,\u201d Ale said. \u201cIn the shape of a Newfoundland, but that\u2019s the best kind.\u201d<\/p>\n
