KATE GERAGHTY<\/p>\n<p>The offers came after months of public scrutiny over alleged delays and failures by its operators to remedy a protracted infestation of the potentially deadly <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/patient-remains-in-icu-four-months-after-deadly-fungus-cluster-20260326-p5zj19.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Aspergillus fungus<\/a>, electrical hazards, and non-compliant cladding.<\/p>\n<p>Sixteen patients were identified as having invasive Aspergillus infections between January 2019 and April 2025, according to an internal document dated May 7, 2025. In January, cancer patients were relocated, and elective surgeries were cancelled after <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/maggots-rain-down-on-patients-at-nsw-hospital-infested-with-mould-20260120-p5nvh2.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">maggots rained down from air conditioning vents<\/a> onto patients\u2019 beds.<\/p>\n<p>Moohkey, when asked why the offers had been rejected, said: \u201cOften these offers [come] with strings attached \u2026 they are bad value for taxpayers, and often are a back door request for a bailout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moohkey said on Wednesday he was confident NSW Health applied good judgment when rejecting the offers, and the details were commercial in confidence.<\/p>\n<p>A NSW Health spokesperson said the $2 offer was not value for money for taxpayers \u201cbecause it did not take into account the potentially tens or hundreds of millions of dollars of liabilities and risk that would also be transferred to the state\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Rigg said the offers were made after Novacare members \u2013 including Honeywell, responsible for building maintenance \u2013 could not resolve \u201cwho is going to pay for the upgrades\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Law firm Shine Lawyers is investigating the effects of mould exposure on families of loved ones treated at <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/patient-remains-in-icu-four-months-after-deadly-fungus-cluster-20260326-p5zj19.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Calvary Mater and other hospitals<\/a>, including <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/how-a-deadly-fungus-cluster-exposed-nsw-s-wicked-hospital-problem-20260227-p5o654.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Prince Alfred <\/a>in Camperdown.<\/p>\n<p>Shine Law clerk Bailey Napier, who lives near Calvary Mater, said that the allegations raised at the inquiry would be deeply upsetting for patients and families who trusted that they and their loved ones would be safe and cared for.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/maggots-rain-down-on-patients-at-nsw-hospital-infested-with-mould-20260120-p5nvh2.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital is grappling with an ongoing mould and maggot infestation.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/16fce95eae280cd5ad94e35ba206486fac8e14aaf8dd4da0ea9e3f6f36de43a7.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand how painful it may be to now be left with fears, questions and uncertainty about whether that trust was broken,\u201d Napier said.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Honeywell said the organisation had engaged constructively with the parliamentary inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson said Honeywell\u2019s contractual scope did not extend to rectifying structural or design defects, including cladding issues and facade leaks, and that it had taken steps beyond its obligations to help prevent further water ingress and reduce the mould risk.<\/p>\n<p>Honeywell facilities director James O\u2019Brien did not appear at the hearing.
