Just 14 per cent of people over 65 have advance care directives. Until now.<\/p>\n<p>Milligan sat down to answer five questions designed to help the adult children of ageing parents have one of the most important conversations of their lives, which many find too frightening or difficult to start.<\/p>\n<p>The questions are part of a new guide called<a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/putthekettleon.com.au\/put-the-kettle-on\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> \u201cPut The Kettle On\u201d from Vera<\/a>, an online platform to support the <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/lifestyle\/life-and-relationships\/sarah-macdonald-never-asked-to-join-this-club-after-10-years-this-is-what-she-s-learnt-20260323-p5ros6.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201csandwich generation\u201d of adults<\/a> who are simultaneously caring for ageing parents and children.<\/p>\n<p>The guide offers families a gentle \u201cin\u201d to a conversation less about end-of-life and more about what it means to their parents to live well in their last decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Put the kettle on\u2019: Five questions for the kitchen tableWhat makes a good day for you?\u00a0What does being independent look like to you?Who would be good to help when decisions need making?Where do your will and wishes stand right now?What would you most want people to know about you?<\/p>\n<p>Clinical psychologist Jo Lamble recommends sitting down on the same side of the table with cups of tea on a quiet afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Listen more than talk, don\u2019t be afraid of silence, and stop if either person gets tired. You can come back to this later.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Each question comes with follow-up questions if they are needed, such as: \u201cWhat are you most proud of?\u201d, \u201cIf you needed more help over time, what would be OK?\u201d and \u201cIs there anything you\u2019d be worried people who love you might get wrong about what you actually want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Almost 60 per cent of Australians aged 45 to 70 are caring for ageing loved ones or expect to be within five to 10 years, and 88 per cent feel unprepared or overwhelmed by caregiving demands, suggests a survey of more than 1000 Australians commissioned by the Vera-affiliated organisation Violet.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa Reader, Vera\u2019s founder, said adult children often found it frightening or too difficult to broach the topics, \u201cso people end up having these conversations and making important decisions at 2am in a hospital corridor because Mum or Dad has had a fall or an emergency presentation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Clinical psychologist Jo Lamble, who devised the questions, said most people who try to talk to their parents about end-of-life will start with heavy topics such as their will or power of attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/lifestyle\/life-and-relationships\/sarah-macdonald-never-asked-to-join-this-club-after-10-years-this-is-what-she-s-learnt-20260323-p5ros6.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sarah Macdonald: \u201cI\u2019m lucky my mum is still alive,&#10;and sometimes dancing herself, but&#10;most days there are appointments,&#10;organisation, bureaucracy and admin.\u201d\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/8f085de0caae172b93442037dda849c2ae9d1074.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can feel like the adult child is working out what\u2019s going to happen with their money,\u201d she said. \u201cWe want to start off really positively and signal that this is about hearing what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Research shows family conflict can increase the likelihood of inappropriate end-of-life care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to lighten the load by saying that if you start having these conversations early and in a relaxed way, you can collate the information, share it among the family, then put it away, and it\u2019s done,\u201d Lamble said.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 70 per cent of<a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/grattan.edu.au\/report\/dying-well\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"> Australians want to die at home.<\/a> About 14 to 17 per cent do so.<\/p>\n<p>About half of all Australians die in hospital, and a large proportion are frail and elderly, \u201cmany are probably receiving low-value care\u201d, Reader said.<\/p>\n<p>Reader said people were applying for at-home care too late and joining long waitlists instead of introducing services earlier, such as gardening or cleaning. It can still meet resistance, Reader said, but it gives parents a chance to get used to the help before their health needs increase.<\/p>\n<p>For Milligan, some decisions were easy, like her power of attorney: her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Isabelle deems that I am beyond salvation, so to speak, \u2018Knock me off, darling. Send me away to the fairies\u2019,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Other questions stumped her.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Isabelle and Emmie Silbery.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/d047598ac660c1da5267f50c6fdc439c1d9f3778.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Isabelle and Emmie Silbery.Paul Jeffers<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realised I wasn\u2019t at all that prepared,\u201d she said of the experience recorded for the podcast Club Sandwich, with journalist Sarah McDonald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be confronting thinking about your end of life and what you want \u2026 we really don\u2019t get the chance to stop and think about it like this,\u201d Milligan said.<\/p>\n<p>Lamble said don\u2019t wait: \u201cDo it early and do it gently. It will make life so much easier down the track.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Wei Lee, palliative physician at Sydney\u2019s Mater Hospital and MQ Health, said: \u201cOftentimes, elderly patients will say, \u2018I don\u2019t want my children to know \u2026 I don\u2019t want to be a burden to them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut involving children in conversations when you are still competent means they will know your wishes and drive them through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Avoiding the stress of complex decision-making allowed children to focus on being present with their parents, which lessened the risk of complex grief and bereavement, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Make the most of your health, relationships, fitness and nutrition with our Live Well newsletter.
