(Supplied: Dave Hughes)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Hughes explained that part of his problem with alcohol was being unable to drink in moderation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I always got too drunk. I&#8217;d sometimes wake up in a police cell,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t violent \u2014 I&#8217;m not a violent person \u2014 but I would be locked up for my own safety really, because I was asleep on the road or something.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I could see my future laying ahead of me \u2026 So, I made a decision before I turned 22 to stop drinking alcohol and I gave up all drugs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But it wasn&#8217;t just Hughes&#8217;s own behaviour that led to his choice to embrace sobriety.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dave Hughes sits at the centre of a small audience and camera crew\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1994a1d5d0cdd86fc2fc1013811f9d61.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dave Hughes (centre left) tells The Assembly&#8217;s journalism students about his experience with alcohol. (ABC iview)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I came from a long line of drinkers,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I grew up with my dad drinking too much, which can be really stressful for kids, and I saw myself doing the same thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He kept drinking when he shouldn&#8217;t have, in my opinion. (AAP: Dean Lewis\/Gary Ramage)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Despite previously disregarding advice from his father that &#8220;family is the most important thing&#8221;, Hughes now understands what his dad was trying to say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It took me a long time to realise that he was right,&#8221; Hughes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">And he&#8217;s now forgiving of his dad&#8217;s heavy drinking during his childhood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had some tough times, but in hindsight, he wanted the best for me,&#8221;  Hughes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He had a lot of wisdom, there&#8217;s no doubt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Hughes thinks a lot about his relationship with his 16-year-old son Rafferty, and aims to be a supportive parent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A lot of people have troubles with their dads \u2014 a lot of blokes \u2014 and I get it, so I&#8217;m trying to not to do that with my own son.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dave Hughes poses with his teenaged son and a mascot on a basketball court\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1ba52d51519657eca49cf0d273c34638.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dave Hughes, pictured with Rafferty in 2021, nurtures a healthy relationship with his son.
