Geelong great Ray Card has been sentenced to nine years behind bars over a drunken crash in November last year that killed his wife, Mandy.<\/p>\n

The 68-year-old pleaded guilty after he drove onto the wrong side of the Geelong Ring Road, colliding head-on with a BMW.<\/p>\n

Mandy was declared dead at the scene while a teenage passenger in the other car was severely injured.<\/p>\n

The couple had been at a wedding prior to the crash, with Card recording a blood alcohol reading more than four times the legal limit.<\/p>\n

His sentence includes a four-year non-parole period.<\/p>\n

Card debuted for Geelong in 1977 and won the 1983 best and fairest.<\/p>\n

He retired after 110 games at the end of 1987.<\/p>\n

He went on to have other match-day roles at the club such as runner and an assistant coach for the reserves team.<\/p>\n

At the time of the crash, Card was president of the Geelong Past Players and Officials Club.<\/p>\n

The group\u2019s treasurer Nick Walsh last year said they were \u201cshattered\u201d to learn about the crash.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe past players and the club are deeply saddened at this news and the passing of Mandy,\u201d Walsh said at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are shattered and are sending our deepest condolences to the family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Card\u2019s father George also played for the Cats in the 1940s.<\/p>\n
