Jai Hindley has put himself in a strong position to fight for a podium place at the 2026 Giro d’Italia despite another crushing stage 9 victory for Jonas Vingegaard.<\/p>\n

The Danish two-time Tour de France winner was supreme in riding to victory on the 184km route from Cervia to Corno alle Scale, closing the gap to overall race leader Afonso Eul\u00e1lio to 2 minutes 24 seconds.<\/p>\n

Eul\u00e1lio impressed to finish in fifth place on the stage, the Portuguese rider showing extraordinary grit to hold onto the pink jersey into the second rest day of the race.<\/p>\n

Felix Gall also showed that he is a force to be reckoned with in the mountains, taking the race to Vingegaard on the final climb.<\/p>\n

But Vingegaard was never put under serious duress, leaping out from Gall’s wheel inside the final kilometre to finish 12 seconds ahead and claim his second stage win of this year’s race.<\/p>\n

“We didn’t want to ride for the stage win,” Vingegaard told reporters after crossing the line.<\/p>\n

“It’s always nice to win, especially for my teammates, who worked hard all day.<\/p>\n

“I’m not in the Maglia Rosa, but I’m exactly where I wanted to be at this point in the Giro.”<\/p>\n

Hindley finished 50 seconds behind Vingegaard alongside fellow Aussie Michael Storer, but crucially finished 48 seconds ahead of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe teammate Giulio Pellizzari to put himself in pole position as sole team leader.<\/p>\n

Whether Hindley remains in that position will come down to how he performs on Tuesday’s flat, 42km time trial.<\/p>\n

Hindley currently sits in fourth place overall, 4 minutes 32 seconds behind Eul\u00e1lio, with Ben O’Connor dropping to eighth, 5:03 behind and Storer in 10th spot at 5:20.<\/p>\n

Prior to the day’s racing Hindley told reporters that despite Vingegaard’s obvious strength there was still a long way to go until the race was decided, with a brutal final week in the Alps sure to be decisive.<\/p>\n

“It’s not over till Rome, mate,” Hindley said.<\/p>\n

“Still a long way to go, a lot can happen. I would say the Giro is probably the most unpredictable of the three grand tours \u2014 it’s not over till it’s over.<\/p>\n

“I think it’s all still to play for. For sure Jonas was very impressive and also Felix put in a great ride, but we have a hard TT coming after the rest day and some pretty hard days in the last week as well.<\/p>\n

“I think it’s still quite an open race, the last week is always the most important.<\/p>\n

“It’s a classic Giro, sometimes it can be a real slow burn and quite often the race is tipped on its head in the last 48 hours.<\/p>\n
