<\/p>\nAlex M\u00e1rquez and Johann Zarco will remain in hospital after the two riders sustained fractures in separate crashes that forced the Catalan Grand Prix to be red-flagged twice on Sunday, local time.<\/p>\n
Gresini Racing’s M\u00e1rquez could not react in time when Pedro Acosta’s bike lost power and he slammed into the back of the KTM before he careered towards the wall and then cartwheeled through the air as he lost control on the gravel.<\/p>\n

M\u00e1rquez was immediately rushed to the hospital, where scans confirmed he had a marginal fracture on the C7 vertebra at the base of his neck, as well as a fracture on his right collarbone, with the Spaniard set to undergo surgery later on Sunday.<\/p>\n
“Everything’s under control. I’m due to go into the operating theatre tonight, but I couldn’t be in better hands,” M\u00e1rquez said on X.<\/p>\n
“Thank you all so much for your concern and for the kind messages I’ve been receiving.”<\/p>\n
After the race restarted, LCR Honda’s Zarco was involved in a crash when he braked late on turn one of the first lap as he took out Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia and Honda’s Luca Marini in a three-rider pile-up.<\/p>\n

Both Bagnaia and Marini immediately and frantically signalled for help from the track marshals after Zarco tumbled across the gravel with his leg caught on Bagnaia’s bike.<\/p>\n
“Don’t worry, we’re still waiting for the test results. I’ve got a neck brace on, but it’s more of a nuisance than anything else,” Zarco said on Instagram.<\/p>\n

“It’s mainly the knee; the ligaments have snapped. But the femur isn’t broken. There’s a small fracture at the bottom of the fibula, on the outside of my left ankle.<\/p>\n
“So there you go, I’ll keep you posted. Just to put your minds at rest, really. More of a scare than anything \u2026 I’m staying in hospital tonight because they want to keep an eye on me.”<\/p>\n
Zarco’s team confirmed that the 35-year-old has “sustained injuries to the anterior and posterior cruciate ligament, and to the medial meniscus” and “also suffered a small fibula tear in the ankle area”.<\/p>\n
Alex M\u00e1rquez’s brother, reigning world champion Marc M\u00e1rquez, was not racing on Sunday as he recovers from surgery to his right shoulder.<\/p>\n
He posted a simple sentence on his Instagram story: “Today I only give thanks.”<\/p>\n

Fabio Di Giannantonio claimed victory on Sunday, despite his leathers still bearing the scars after he fell following M\u00e1rquez’s horror crash.<\/p>\n
The Italian rode through a hail of debris before a rogue tyre struck his arm, causing him to fall, although he was able to remount and ride back to the pits for the restart.<\/p>\n
It was the Italian’s second-ever MotoGP victory and VR46 Racing’s first since the Indian Grand Prix in 2023, although it was overshadowed by the horrific crashes.<\/p>\n
