Built for Sony E-mount, the lens pairs a constant f/2.8 aperture with an internal zoom design that holds physical length fixed across the focal range.

Until now, Thypoch has built its reputation on character-driven manual-focus optics, from the Simera 28mm and 35mm f/1.4 M-mount primes that introduced the brand in 2023 through to the Simera-C cine lens line developed alongside sister-brand DZOFILM. The Voyager 24-50mm f/2.8 represents a clear pivot: a native autofocus stills zoom that condenses the classic 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm prime trio into one fixed-length barrel. According to Thypoch, the zoom architecture draws on the parent group’s cinema lens engineering experience, where constant-aperture and internal-zoom designs have long been the discipline.

Thypoch Voyager 24-50mm f/2.8. Image credit: ThypochA fixed-barrel f/2.8, designed not to move

The Voyager’s internal zoom mechanism keeps the lens at a constant 92.8mm / 3.65in throughout the focal range. For gimbal operators, this matters in practical terms: the center of gravity stays in place, removing the rebalancing step that conventional extending zooms force between focal lengths. The fixed barrel also eliminates lens creep when the camera is stowed and removes the extending external section that typically becomes the weakest sealing point on traditional zooms.

Holding f/2.8 across the full 24–50mm range keeps exposure consistent as the operator zooms, which is one fewer variable when working in mixed light. The aperture uses a 10-blade rounded diaphragm intended to maintain circular highlights at mid apertures and produce defined sunstars when stopped down.

Optical formula and rendering character

Thypoch positions the Voyager around rendering character as much as resolution, which is consistent with the brand’s stills lens lineage. The optical formula uses 16 elements in 13 groups, including two aspherical, three ED, and three HRI (high refractive index) elements. According to the company, this combination is designed to control aberrations across the frame at all focal lengths while preserving the gradual focus transition Thypoch’s manual lenses are known for.

Minimum focus distance sits at 0.3m / 0.98ft across the entire zoom range, yielding a maximum magnification of 0.216x. The angle of view runs from 83° diagonal at 24mm to 47° at 50mm, with a 43.2mm image circle covering the full-frame format.

Demo images from the Thypoch Voyager 24-50mm f/2.8. Image credit: ThypochNative Sony E-mount autofocus

The Voyager is Thypoch’s first AF design, and the company built the AF unit specifically for quiet, responsive operation in documentary, street, and event use. The lens supports eye AF, AF-C tracking, and both in-camera and lens-side AF/MF switching, communicating natively over the Sony E-mount.

Thypoch lists tested compatibility with the Sony ZV-E1, A7C II, A7CR, A7 IV, A7 V, A7R IV, A7R V, A7S III, A9 III, and FX3. Coverage across the current Alpha lineup, including the FX3, is relevant for video shooters who would benefit from the constant aperture and the fixed center of gravity on a gimbal.

Sealed at every joint

Weather sealing is implemented at the lens mount, focus ring, zoom ring, and front element. The internal zoom contributes to overall sealing integrity, since there’s no extending barrel section to compromise. Thypoch describes the lens as developed for dust and moisture resistance, which paired with a sealed Sony Alpha body completes a fully weather-resistant shooting system rather than introducing a weak link.

The barrel measures 73.6mm / 2.9in at its maximum diameter and weighs 432g / 15.2oz, keeping it compact enough to remain mounted through a working day. The filter thread is 67mm, matching the prevailing standard among compact f/2.8 zooms. Front cap, rear cap, lens hood, and a cleaning cloth are included in the box.

Thypoch Voyager 24-50mm f/2.8. Source: ThypochCinema-zoom thinking applied to a stills lens

Thypoch points to its parent group’s cinema-lens experience as the foundation for the Voyager’s architecture, noting that constant aperture and fixed barrel length are problems cinema zoom engineering solved first. The Voyager applies that approach to a stills-format autofocus zoom. Whether the optical performance lives up to that lineage is something we’ll be interested to see once review samples are circulating.

Price and availability

The Thypoch Voyager 24-50mm f/2.8 carries an MSRP of USD $649 / EUR €569, with an introductory launch price of USD $619 / EUR €539 running through May 31, 2026. The lens ships in Sony E-mount only, with local availability beginning in early June 2026.
