SYDNEY SWANS (9-1, 152.2%)

Last week: Ranked 1st, defeated Collingwood by 6 points

The wins keep on coming for the Swans, albeit the past two over North Melbourne (+8 points) and Collingwood (+6) have been hard work. The Sydney believer would tell you the team won in a different fashion on Friday night, defeating the Magpies with good old-fashioned surge footy on a ‘win ugly’ night with their lowest score of the season (81 points) so far. The Sydney doubter, though, would tell you the Magpies might’ve set a blueprint for other teams to overcome and thwart the Swans’ scintillating high-handball corridor game — a style that might struggled to stand up in highly-contested, high-stakes finals. Nonetheless, the numbers don’t lie. Sydney sits on top of the ladder with nine wins and clearly the best percentage in the competition. And as revealed on Fox Footy’s On The Couch on Monday night, the Swans are one of just two teams in Champion Data’sPremiership Window after Round 10, ranked first in the league for points scored and second for least points conceded. But Dean Cox’s side faces arguably its biggest challenge yet this weekend: Geelong in Geelong. Beat the Cats on their home turf — a task the Dockers weren’t able to do in Round 1 — and the Swans’ premiership favouritism only strengthens.

This week: Geelong Cats at GMHBA Stadium, Saturday at 4.15pm

Voss bags four in opening half | 00:57

2. WALYALUP (9-1, 134.9%)

Last week: Ranked 4th, defeated Essendon by 43 points

Nine in a row. Nine in a row! It’s a streak that’s been coming for a while, for the talent on this Fremantle list — which really has no chasms — has been well documented across the past few years. Now they’re winning in different ways. In Rounds 4 and 5, Justin Longmuir’s side trailed Adelaide and Collingwood respectively in the final quarter, before kicking two late goals to seal consecutive tight victories. Against the Western Bulldogs in Round 8, the Dockers trailed by 26 points midway through the second term, kicked 11 of the game’s next 13 games then saw off a late Bulldogs fightback to claim a 12-point win. Against a flag fancy in Hawthorn, Freo turned a 22-point third-quarter deficit into a 15-point win. Then against Essendon on Sunday, the Dockers blitzed Essendon with a 10-goal to one first half in wet conditions then, shrewdly, managed the game time of stars like Luke Jackson and Caleb Serong in the second half when the win was secured. As Fox Footy’s David King declared on First Crack, the Dockers are clearly playing with a “long game” mindset, for they know they’re primed. They sit just outside Champion Data’s Premiership Window — they are seventh for points scored — but have averaged 101.2 points from their past five games, plus they now have the best defence in the competition.

This week: St Kilda at Optus Stadium, Friday at 8.30pm

Mannagh flying thanks to new mindset | 00:47

3. GEELONG CATS (7-3, 123.5%)

Last week: Ranked 5th, defeated Brisbane Lions by 41 points

You could argue the Cats’ win over the Lions was the most impressive by any team so far this season. Against reigning premiers Brisbane at The Gabba off a five-day break, the Cats produced an almighty, powerful performance as Shaun Mannagh and Bailey Smith ran amok, Tom Stewart quintessentially controlled the backline and the forward line found its rhythm. As Gerard Whateley said on Fox Footy’s AFL 360 on Monday night, this was the ultimate “flex” from the Cats. Geelong has now won five of its past six matches by an average margin of 53 points — and in those games, it’s averaged 125.4 points in those five wins. The Cats are ranked third in the AFL for attack, but seventh for defence — hence they’re not officially in the Premiership Window. But they’re trending in the right direction, conceding 76.2 points on average across the past six weeks. Do the Cats go into Saturday’s blockbuster against Sydney — and my word what a shame this game clashes with Scott Pendlebury’s milestone match — as favourites? The fact it’s at GMHBA Stadium and their recent formline has been more convincing than the Swans, you’d have to say yes.

This week: Sydney Swans at GMHBA Stadium, Saturday at 4.15pm

Is it time to worry about the Lions? | 07:55

4. BRISBANE LIONS (6-4, 116.6%)

Last week: Ranked 3rd, lost to Geelong Cats by 41 points

Time to ring the alarm bells? Maybe we need more evidence. After all, the Lions have still won six of their past eight games. But it was the manner — or Mannagh, excuse the pun — in which they lost to Geelong by 41 points that concerned dual premiership Kangaroo David King the most. After their 2024 premiership, the Lions were conceding four more points per game by Round 10, 2025 – ranked seventh at the time – but they “held ground”. That’s not quite what’s happening this year, with Brisbane conceding nearly two more goals per game than it did last year, dropping from sixth to 10th in the competition for defence. It’s why they sit outside the official Premiership Window, despite having the league’s second-best offence. Speaking on First Crack, King said: “The ‘she’ll be right’ approach doesn’t ring true to me, when you look at the defensive side of the game … This, to me, is a point in time where, if you are to win three (premierships) in a row, you need to stamp this (out) now.” Three huge games before the Lions’ bye loom: The Giants (ENGIE Stadium), Fremantle and Gold Coast (People First Stadium). Lose two of those and we might be talking about the back-to-back premiers as a ‘good wildcard team’.

This week: GWS Giants at ENGIE Stadium, Sunday at 12.30pm

‘They just looked a little more hungry’ | 04:24

5. HAWTHORN (6-3-1, 110.2%)

Last week: Ranked 2nd, lost to Melbourne by 39 points

A three-place drop for the Hawks, who’ve been exposed defensively in the past three weeks. They conceded 93 points in the draw against Collingwood, 88 points in the loss to fast-finishing Fremantle and a whopping 120 points in the loss to the red-hot Demons, who put 12 goals on Sam Mitchell’s side in the second half. Triple premiership Tiger Jack Riewoldt told On The Couch the Demons “outran” Hawthorn and “bullied them as well around the ball”. Mitchell shared a similar sentiment, telling reporters post-game: “They just looked a little bit more hungry than we did today, you can’t win many games at this level of footy if you’re outhunted by the opposition.” There’s issues at the coalface, so Will Day can’t come back fast enough. But he’ll start back in the VFL this week — and considering his injury history, Hawthorn will surely take a conservative approach. If the Hawks are a genuine top-six side — like we still believe they are, hence their No.5 ranking — they win their next three games against Adelaide (UTAS Stadium), St Kilda (Marvel Stadium) and Western Bulldogs (MCG) before their bye. A couple of losses, though, will have us reassessing.

This week: Adelaide Crows at UTAS Stadium, Thursday at 7.30pm

Hardwick hails suns resilience | 04:44

6. GOLD COAST SUNS (7-3, 119.9%)

Last week: Ranked 7th, defeated to Port Adelaide by 25 points

The Suns’ love affair with Darwin continues — a 10th straight TIO Stadium AFL win. Although you sense they’d hit the wall in the final term as the Power mounted a mini comeback. But the fact the Suns were two men down for the entire second half due to injuries to Lachie Weller (hamstring) and Will Graham (concussion), it’s no wonder Damien Hardwick was “really, really proud” of his team. After conceding over 100 points in four straight games — which led to three losses — the Suns have adjusted defensively in the past three weeks, conceding 63, 60 and 73 points to the Giants, Saints and Power respectively. It’s why they’re just one of two teams, alongside Sydney, to be in the Premiership Window after Round 10. So despite their flaky nature, the Suns are still well placed for a top-six finish. A banana peel game against the Kangaroos looms this weekend, but claim that and they get to their bye at 8-3 with a percentage likely over 120. But it’ll be in the weeks after their bye where they’ll be truly judged, with a four-game stretch against the Lions, Cats (GMHBA Stadium), Hawks and Dockers (Optus Stadium).

This week: North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium, Saturday at 1.15pm

Finals now a reality for daring Dees? | 11:00

7. NARRM (7-3, 107.6%)

Last week: Ranked 9th, defeated Hawthorn by 39 points

“I want us to be box office,” Demons coach Steven King declared after his side defeated Hawthorn by 39 points in a statement win. And box office they’ve, remarkably, become. The Dees have kicked over 100 points in seven matches and scored 99 on one of the three other occasions they fell short of three figures. King has Melbourne playing a markedly different style than 12 months ago and trusts it will continue to stand up against the competition’s best. King told reporters: “I said from day one I wanted to be a team that could kick 100 points every game and challenge the opposition. I hope we’re playing a brand of footy that even neutrals would come and watch and go: ‘Gee, that’s exciting to watch and that’s attractive footy.’” While it’s all well and good to have such offensive power, it’s defensively where the jury is still out and, ultimately, will be truly tested come September — for it looks like the Demons are genuinely finals-bound. The Dees have still conceded over 100 points in five of their 10 games this season. It’s why they’re not in the Champion Data Premiership Window — they’re 13th for points allowed — because finals footy isn’t shootout footy. Still, their draw up looks good. In fact they should start favourites in six of their next eight matches. That could get them to 16(!) wins after Round 19, before a true litmus test against the Cats, Suns and Dockers. The Dare to Dreamons, hey?

This week: Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium, Sunday at 3.15pm

Ah Chee ready to return for Crows | 00:45

8. KUWARNA (6-4, 109.7%)

Last week: Ranked 10th, defeated North Melbourne by 68 points

Fox Footy’s Ken Hinkley said it best at half-time: ““Crows, welcome back to the season.” Because we mightn’t see a better quarter by any team this season. Adelaide’s almighty second-term blitz against North Melbourne was Matthew Nicks’ side at its best: 10.4 to 0.2, +74 disposals, +21 contested possessions and, just as impressively, +17 tackles. Roos coach Alastair Clarkson said: “That second quarter was some of the best footy I’ve seen by a team for a long time.” Is it the turning point quarter that genuinely kickstarts the Crows in 2026? If it is, at least Adelaide is still coming from a solid foundation at 6-4. They’ve conceded 75, 61 and 65 points in the past three weeks — although those opponents have been the Power, Tigers and Kangaroos, so we’re not getting too ahead of ourselves. But you sense a win over Hawthorn on Thursday night in Tassie — a venue the Hawks have won their past 11 matches at — before their mid-season bye would truly set the Crows up for a top-six tilt and rid of them ‘good wildcard team’ territory.

This week: Hawthorn at UTAS Stadium, Thursday at 7.30pm

‘They overwhelmed us’ | 10:49

9. WESTERN BULLDOGS (5-5, 91.7%)

Last week: Ranked 6th, lost to Carlton by 12 points

Dear oh dear, it’s fallen in a heap quickly. After Round 4, the Dogs were the league’s remaining unbeaten team, had recorded their best start to a season since 2021 and sat No.1 in our Power Rankings. Five losses in six weeks later, they’ve dropped a whopping eight spots. The optimist would say there’s been some defensive improvement in the past two weeks, restricting the Power to 72 points and Carlton 74. The pessimist would simply say: “They lost to Carlton.” Yes there are big personnel and availability issues — hopefully star ruck Tim English will clear concussion protocols this week — but some players are out of form. What’s happened to Ed Richards and Rhylee West? Is Joel Freijah being played out of position? But as AFL 360 co-host Gerard Whateley said on Monday night, the Dogs — who sit 11th for points scored and 11th for points conceded — are “clinging to 10th and everything from the early part of the season had dissolved”. Whateley added: “They’ve got the triple threat going now. They’ve got injury, which is substantial. They’ve got injured players who aren’t able to perform to their levels. And they’re not good at anything currently.” Maybe they’re just an ‘good wildcard team’ destined to finish between seventh and 10th? If they’re better than that, they’re picking up a few wins in the lead-up to their Round 16 bye, with matches against Melbourne (5th on the ladder), Collingwood (11th), Hawthorn (6th), Adelaide (8th) and St Kilda (9th). But on recent form, the Dogs wouldn’t go into too many of those five games starting as favourites.

This week: Melbourne at Marvel Stadium, Sunday at 3.15pm

Pendlebury speaks on milestone match | 02:44

10. COLLINGWOOD (4-5-1, 99.1%)

Last week: Ranked 8th, lost to Sydney Swans by 6 points

Happy Pendles week! But could the Pies be the hardest team to rank of all 18 clubs? Some would point to last week’s gallant loss to ladder-leaders Sydney and argue the Magpies deserve to be higher than the Bulldogs on these Power Rankings. For Collingwood, at one stage, seemed destined for one of the season’s great upsets — two weeks after their draw with Hawthorn. But these types of Collingwood performances have been scattered among poor losses to Brisbane and Geelong, as well as a near-loss to Carlton. They have the potential to be better than an ‘good wildcard team’, but there still seems to be too many holes in their profile. The Magpies’ solid defensive game remains their trademark — they’re fourth for least points conceded this year — but their lack of scoring power — 14th(!) for points scored — remains a significant flaw that doesn’t look like correcting anytime soon. The Collingwood credentials conversation, however, takes a back seat this week as the club prepares to celebrate Scott Pendlebury’s record-breaking 433rd match against West Coast. The Pies, no doubt, will do a cracking job honouring their legendary No.10 and should be too strong for the Eagles. Should be.

This week: West Coast Eagles at MCG, Saturday at 4.35pm

Ross Lyon pleased with Saints’ composure | 07:30

11. EURO-YROKE (5.5, 112.8%)

Last week: Ranked 11th, defeated Richmond by 36 points

The Saints did what they had to do against the Tigers to make it three wins from their past four games. The big positives were the performances of Hugo Garcia and Max Hall, who thrived with more on-ball minutes in the absence of Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera. It means when the Saints superstar returns from his calf issue, he might be able to rest deep forward more, which will give the Saints an edge and dynamic that’ll be tough to counter. St Kild, surprisingly, isn’t too far away from Champion Data’s Premiership Window, as they have the league’s fifth-best defence and eighth-best offence, meaning Ross Lyon’s team is just two attack ranking spots away from the window. Nonetheless, the Saints’ past three wins have been against the Eagles (15th), Blues (16th) and Tigers (18th) — all clubs they should be beating. It’s why the Saints aren’t out of ‘good wildcard team’ territory. We must wait until the Saints’ Round 16 bye to truly assess their credentials, for they have a season-defining fixture ahead: Fremantle (Optus Stadium), Hawthorn, Sydney (SCG), GWS Giants and Western Bulldogs. Emerge from that run with at least three wins and we might be talking about the Saints in a different light.

This week: Fremantle at Optus Stadium, Friday at 8.30pm

Carr finds positives in late surge | 05:42

12. YARTAPUULTI (3-7, 105.2%)

Last week: Ranked 12th, lost to Gold Coast Suns by 25 points

Colleague Max Laughton, who usually puts this column together with his unique flair and spin, interrupted his mid-season overseas sojourn to offer this to the wonderful people of X: “Port currently having the best ‘look impressive but don’t actually win too many games, for draft reasons’ season I’ve seen in a long time.” This was in the wake of the Power’s latest plucky loss to the Suns, in which they should’ve won by around two-and-a-half goals on expected score. Yet Josh Carr’s side has now recorded five losses from their past six games by an average losing margin of nine points. Their percentage (105.2%) is actually ranked 10th in the competition, yet they sit 14th on the ladder. So our No.12 Power Rankings spot still feels apt, even though a lot of the numbers suggest they’re in the ‘good wildcard team’ conversation. A good opportunity to bank two wins either side of their bye, with games coming up against the Blues and Eagles. But, of course, Dougie Cochrane …

This week: Carlton at Adelaide Oval, Saturday at 7.35pm

Adam Kingsley addresses Giants’ concerns | 06:14

13. GWS GIANTS (4-6, 90.1%)

Last week: Ranked 13th, lost to West Coast Eagles by 17 points

AFL 360 co-host Garry Lyon on Monday night suggested the Giants’ loss to West Coast was “one of the losses of the year” — and not in a good way. Because the Giants, no matter how hard they’ve been hit by injury this year, simply had to win that game in Perth to be a finals contender. Now at 4-6, they mightn’t even be in ‘good wildcard team’ territory. And there’s a good chance they’re 4-8 at their mid-season bye, with tough games against Brisbane and Melbourne. Key pillars Jesse Hogan and Sam Taylor can’t come back quick enough.

This week: Brisbane Lions at ENGIE Stadium, Sunday at 12.30pm

Clarkson: ‘Game over at half time’ | 08:28

14. NORTH MELBOURNE (4-6, 96.7%)

Last week: Ranked 14th, lost to Adelaide Crows by 68 points

Surely, surely, the Kangaroos are past a quarter/performance like that on Saturday? Yet here we are highlighting a horrific second quarter that saw the Roos concede 10 goals to zip and lose both the disposal (-41) and tackle (-17) counts on their way to a 68-point loss. For all the promise they’d shown against in plucky losses to the Lions, Giants, Cats and Swans, the Roos took a significant step backwards against Adelaide. And, ultimately, their defence remains a big issue, for they’ve conceded an average of 114 points in their past five losses. They should be a ‘good wildcard team’ with an upward trajectory, but it’s still too tough to trust them. The upside is that after tough games against the Suns and Dockers, North faces the Eagles, Tigers, Bombers and Power across a four-game stretch, meaning they could enter the final two months of the season with a relatively even win-loss ratio.

This week: Gold Coast Suns at Marvel Stadium, Saturday at 1.15pm

Carlton welcome new coach with rare win | 02:07

15. CARLTON (2-8, 81.8%)

Last week: Ranked 15th, defeated Western Bulldogs by 12 points

Firstly, well done Blues fans. Enjoy the four points — as you no doubt would’ve — because that would’ve been sweet after a tumultuous few weeks. Reality check? That win over the Dogs might’ve been the definition of a sugar hit, for it was essentially the same Carlton players playing the same Carlton game plan, albeit just converting their opportunities when it mattered most in the final term. The challenge now is to take that momentum on the road and perform against a Port Adelaide side that has challenged some of the best teams in the league in recent weeks.

This week: Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, Saturday at 7.35pm

Scott grilled on 2026 win-loss ratio | 04:03

16. ESSENDON (1-9, 70.6%)

Last week: Ranked 16th, lost to Fremantle by 43 points

Just when the young Bombers tease you with a promising performance like the losses to the Suns and Giants, along comes a loss like the one to Fremantle on Sunday where they kick just 1.8 in the first half. Ultimately, the defensive numbers don’t lie — and the Bombers have conceded over 100 points in each of their past five straight games. The pressure is building on coach Brad Scott, who told AFL 360 on Monday night “it takes a special kind of lunatic to lead” a club in this rebuild state, but declared: “I intend to see it through.” Whether the club’s board, despite the public statements, feels the same might become clearer after Round 13, with the Bombers facing the Tigers (18th), Eagles (15th) and Blues (16th) across the next three weeks. The fans are already impatient and fed up, so it’s grim to ponder how they might react to multiple uncompetitive performances against fellow lowly teams in the coming weeks.

This week: Richmond at MCG, Friday at 7.45pm

McQualter speaks on ‘exceptional’ Reid | 10:03

17. WAALITJ MARAWAR (3-7, 64.2%)

Last week: Ranked 18th, defeated GWS Giants by 17 points

As AFL 360 co-host Gerard Whateley suggested on Monday night: “You’ve just got to get a win from time to time.” With the league’s youngest list, the Eagles’ progression won’t be linear. There’ll be dramatic fluctuations from like a 128-point loss to Sydney and an 11-point loss to a depleted Richmond, to a stirring 17-point win over the Giants. Powered by an inspirational two-goal, 34 disposal performance from Harley Reid, the Eagles stormed home with the final four goals of the match. The best aspect to Reid’s game was that 60 per cent of his 34 touches were won in the forward half and that he had 12 inside 50s — six more than the next best on the ground. Next up? Scott Pendlebury’s Pies at the MCG in the Collingwood legends 433rd game. And you know what? The Eagles have the chance to play ultimate party poopers …

This week: Collingwood at MCG, Saturday at 4.35pm

Yze on on ‘scattered & frantic’ Tigers | 10:33

18. RICHMOND (1-9, 60.9%)

Last week: Ranked 17th, lost to St Kilda by 36 points

Thank goodness Nick Vlastuin avoided suspension, for the Tigers would’ve seriously been in VFL top-up territory considering the state of their injury list, which saw Campbell Gray (hamstring) added on the weekend. It’s remarkable that at Round 11, we could have two lowly-ranked teams playing for the ‘Player X Cup’ — but that’s the potential of Friday night’s Bombers-Tigers game at the MCG. Lose to Essendon and the Tigers would go one game and significant percentage behind the Tigers. While club-tied stars Dougie Cochrane (Port Adelaide) and Cody Walker (Carlton) are widely regarded as the top two players in this year’s draft, Northern Knights big man Harry Van Hattum is gaining momentum as the best player in the open draft.

This week: Essendon at MCG, Friday at 7.45pm

Hello and welcome back to the Power Rankings.
