{"id":680122,"date":"2026-05-19T05:16:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T05:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/680122\/"},"modified":"2026-05-19T05:16:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T05:16:10","slug":"boxing-nelson-asofa-solomona-accuses-george-burgess-of-lacking-confidence-during-liam-paro-vs-lewis-crocker-press-conference-video-latest-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/680122\/","title":{"rendered":"Boxing: Nelson Asofa-Solomona accuses George Burgess of lacking confidence during Liam Paro vs Lewis Crocker press conference, video, latest news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nelson Asofa-Solomona has accused George Burgess of growing increasingly uncomfortable during their three face offs over NRL Magic Round weekend \u2014 and now fears the South Sydney premiership hero may quit on their crossover blockbuster altogether.<\/p>\n<p>The declaration arrived late in an entertaining Monday press conference in Brisbane where \u2013 to officially announce Liam Paro\u2019s hyped IBF welterweight title fight against Lewis Crocker \u2013 Burgess also declared himself ready to knock \u2018Big Nasty\u2019 out cold.<\/p>\n<p>The Rabbitohs Old Boy also then questioned Asofa-Solomona\u2019s defensive abilities, and suggested he will need to have improved significantly from his previous wins over Jeremy Latimore and Jarrod Wallace. <\/p>\n<p><img class=\"i-amphtml-fill-content i-amphtml-replaced-content\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779017096_680_poster-fallback.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Paro v Crocker | Wednesday June 24 from 7pm AEST | Liam Paro gets his long awaited title shot against IBF welterweight champion, Lewis Crocker. | <a href=\"https:\/\/kayosports.com.au\/en-AU\/welcome\/ppv\/paro-v-crocker?pg=default&amp;extcamp=fsaeditoriallinkboxing-edt-fsp-lnk-awr-grc-box-kyo&amp;channel=fsa&amp;campaign=fsacontra&amp;voucher=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Liam Paro excited to &#8220;make history&#8221; | 27:35<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere during proceedings, a pair of new nicknames were also unveiled for Australian boxing \u2013 including \u2018The Croc Hunter\u2019 \u2013 will promoters No Limit announced three more fights for the undercard of Paro\u2019s hyped July 24 showdown.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com.au\/boxing\/boxing-2026-nelson-asofasolomona-vs-george-burgess-fight-details-date-how-to-watch\/news-story\/55dd089ff3ae4e530180cbf6a9292ff2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> co-main between two former NRL enforcers<\/a>, Australia\u2019s longtime super featherweight favourite Liam Wilson will challenge Romania\u2019s undefeated Alexandru Marin (19-0), while rising cruiserweight prospect Luke Modini faces China\u2019s Peng Qu (17-2-1).<\/p>\n<p>The Pat Rafter Arena card will also include an exciting domestic heavyweight scrap between Demsey McKean and Liam Talivaa.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Asofa-Solomona also used the Brisbane media event to again take aim at Burgess as he looks to continue his hyped rise as the new king of Australian crossover boxing.<\/p>\n<p>Only minutes after the former Bunnies enforcer declared himself ready to win via KO, the fighter dubbed \u2018Big Nasty\u2019 shrugged: \u201cHe\u2019s an actor by trade, so I\u2019m not too sure if he\u2019s putting on an act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just really hope he shows up on the night. That\u2019s all the matters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was confident the other day, but the way he\u2019s talking now? I\u2019m not sure he is too confident [anymore].<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo who knows? It could all be an act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a lot of respect for George for chasing this fight. And who knows? Maybe that happens to George.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnd of the day though, it doesn\u2019t matter. As long as he turns up, that\u2019s all that matters to me \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At which point Main Event MC Ben Damon asked Burgess for a response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be there,\u201d he grinned. \u201cI\u2019ve put the work in and I\u2019ll be putting more work in leading up to the fight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I\u2019ll be there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know how to regulate my emotions. I know how to breath and take on the big moments. I\u2019ll be ready for fight night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in proceedings, Burgess also revealed the fight name he will carry into his professional debut &#8212; \u2018Butch\u2019 &#8212; is a nod to his grandfather and his life as a feared English bareknuckle brawler.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what I\u2019m fighting for,\u201d Burgess said. \u201cI\u2019ve got history in my family, and I\u2019m paying homage to them. My granddad Butch, that will be my [ring] name \u2026 just paying tribute to him and those who came before him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to take a boxing fight. It\u2019s been a big goal of mine to step away from being a football playing and test myself in what is the hardest sport in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked specifically about the NAS challenge, he continued: \u201cWe\u2019ve played Tests against each other on the footy field. And now I want to test myself in the ring. (Photo by Chris Hyde\/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Burgess also questioned his rival\u2019s defensive deficiencies, using as an example his most recent outing against Jarrod Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Jarrod landed some good shots,\u201d he shrugged, before adding of NAS: \u201cHopefully he improves in his next fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Think he needs to?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, his defence still needs work,\u201d Burgess continued. \u201cBut he\u2019s only just started boxing, like myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re here to learn but we\u2019re also not rugby players anymore. We\u2019re stepping into the world of boxing and dedicating our lives to it \u2026 so hopefully you don\u2019t see rugby players out there on June 24 but two boxers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Does he believe he can he stop Big Nelson?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t be here if I didn\u2019t,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Asofa-Solomona, meanwhile, also suggested the fact Burgess is on debut would count against him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll boxers know experience and momentum is the main thing,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I truly believe my experience is going to prevail. And let him enjoy the bright lights because it\u2019s going to be over soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s got to be wary \u2026 he\u2019s coming to the land of The Croc Hunter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he should tread carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked by Damon if Paro was now effectively taking the late, great Steve Irwin\u2019s nickname for his world title blockbuster, and the man looking to become Queensland\u2019s first ever two division king nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, 100 per cent,\u201d he grinned. \u201cYou\u2019re never [again] going to get the opportunity to fight the Croc in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m excited.<\/p>\n<p>Liam Paro becomes \u201cThe Croc Hunter\u201dSource: News Corp Australia<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m also respectful. He\u2019s earned his stripes and I\u2019ll let him have them for now. It\u2019s going to be a cracker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soon after, the challenger continued: \u201cIf you follow me, you know what I bring to the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI leave everything in the ring. That\u2019s the competitiveness I have in me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019ll have it until the day I die.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is top level boxing. It doesn\u2019t get any higher than this. And to be blessed enough, God willing, to secure a second world title in a second division it\u2019s crazy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it\u2019s going to be a war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I have to box his ears off for 12 rounds I will. And if that knockout is there, I\u2019ll take it.
