Obviously, there’s a difference between fullback and half, and that’s the defence side of things, and that’s probably something I wouldn’t be used to.

“But with the footy, it would be pretty similar to how I play.”

Get all the latest NRL news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

‘Ponga is better now than Dally M year’ | 01:25

BLUES DEBUTANT ON THE LAURIE DALEY COFFEE BEHIND CALL-UP

Blues debutant Addin Fonua-Blake has opened up on his coffee catch-up with NSW coach Laurie Daley while admitting he thought a State of Origin call-up was “probably past me”.

Fonua-Blake was available to be selected for the first time this year after the NRL changed its eligibility rules.

While the Sharks enforcer has primarily represented Tonga on the international stage, he previously played one Test for New Zealand — a tier one nation.

It meant that until this year he was ineligible to suit up for the Blues, but when that changed Daley organised to meet up with Fonua-Blake for coffee at a local cafe in the Shire, hoping to find out what the 30-year-old’s goals were for the year.

“I told him I wanted to try make the Origin team and that it would mean the world to me,” Fonua-Blake said.

“Growing up watching these games as a kid you want to be a part of them.

“He just said, ‘Alright, well, go out there and prove to me why you should be in the team’, and I feel like I’ve done that.”

Daley clearly felt the same, with Fonua-Blake revealing he got the call from the Blues coach while he was driving home on Sunday.

It was a mixture of emotions for the Sharks front rower, who was both “excited” and “a little bit nervous” but “smiling from ear to ear”.

Addin Fonua-Blake makes his Origin debut. (Photo by Matt King/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

“I thought this game was probably past me,” he later admitted.

“Obviously with the rules, I was just a fan from afar watching the games.

“When the post got put out that the rules were changing, it was something that I was wanting to be a part of.

“I’m just happy that I got a call-up and all the hard work has paid off.”

Fonua-Blake made the decision to represent New Zealand, and therefore rule himself out of Origin contention, much earlier in his career and doesn’t have any regrets.

“I backed that,” Fonua-Blake said.

“I feel like they (the Blues) backed my decision as well.

“There were always conversations like, ‘Oh, do you reckon you would have made it?’ or whatever.

“And I just said, ‘Oh, look, I don’t know if I would have made it, but I would have loved to have given it a shot’.

“Now we don’t have to think about the what-ifs. I wasn’t sure if I was going to get the call. (Billy) obviously just rings up and let you know you’re in the team and obviously I had a little brief chat about what sort of played out in the last two years… I didn’t cry but I was a bit emotional too myself, so I’m just really happy to be back.”

In a lot of ways, that isn’t just being back in Origin camp either. (Photo by Bradley Kanaris/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

The 26-year-old said on Monday that he knew he would eventually get back to playing footy again, but what exactly that looked like remained up in the air.

“The hardest thing was the uncertainty at the beginning. Obviously I had so much time off, we didn’t really have a clear direction of where we were going,” he explained.

“I took six months off and we were just hoping that it would get better and then once we had the surgery, there’s still another six-to-eight months for you to know if it’s even worked.

“So there’s probably a year period there where you’re kind of just treading water, you don’t know if it’s going to get better or when it’s going to get better but we did everything right and the timelines worked out well and like I said, here we are now.

“It’s just part of life, you’ve got some hurdles you got to get over and some hurdles bigger than others and mine maybe was at some point in time, but you’ve just got to crack on with it.

“It’s just one of those things that you’ve just got to get on with life, there’s no point sitting there going on about it, because that doesn’t really help anyone.”

The remarkable comeback of Tom Flegler | 07:08

‘HAVE A CRY’: WOODS REIGNITES SLATER FEUD

It seems like there is no love lost between Billy Slater and Aaron Woods.

The pair clashed last year after the former Blues front rower called Slater a “grub”, with the Queensland coach taking exception to that tag and publicly calling Woods out at the time.

It is clearly still a sore spot with reports last week that Slater is tipped to blacklist Woods during State of Origin this year, not that the 35-year-old seems to care that much.

Speaking on the Triple M Breakfast Show this week, Woods was asked how he would respond if Slater was brought into the studio.

“I’d go, ‘How good’s this? Three grubs in a row’. Honestly, he wouldn’t bother me one single bit,” Woods replied.

“It doesn’t bother me one single bit. If he wants to have a cry, he can have a cry up north. I couldn’t care less.”

That sort of attitude wouldn’t go down well with Slater, who was scathing in his response to the “grub” comment when asked about it during last year’s series.

“When you hold a position in the media or in our game, I feel that’s a privilege. And with that privilege comes a responsibility,” Slater said.

“I sit in that position most weeks and you amplify your voice to millions of people. You’re not talking to your mates in the pub.

“When you degrade someone personally in a derogatory manner, you probably don’t deserve one of those privileged positions that we’re all in.

“You don’t know what people are going through. And although I might be able to handle it, the next person mightn’t be. Maybe our last coach (Paul Green) didn’t.”

Slater later apologised for referencing the late Maroons coach Paul Green in his response.

Walker to take Maroons 7 jersey | 02:51

TURBO BACKS IN MANLY TEAMMATES TO STAR IN ORIGIN DEBUT

Injured Sea Eagles skipper Tom Trbojevic has backed Blues rookie Tolu Koula to provide “strike out wide” in the State of Origin opener next week, while he also gave his thoughts on the massive call to bring James Tedesco back into the team.

Koula has played games on the wing in NSW Cup and for Tonga, but the Manly speedster has never been named there in the NRL.

That didn’t stop NSW coach Laurie Daley from picking the powerful athlete on the wing for next week’s series opener in Sydney ahead of veteran Josh Addo-Carr.

“He’s a very confident kid. He’s going to be a real strike for them out wide.”

Trbojevic would have been in the team had he not suffered a hamstring injury against the Cowboys last month, with the superstar fullback revealing he likely won’t be back until round 16.

He’s been able to watch on as teammate Haumole Olakau’atu has run riot on the right edge that led to him earning his first start for the Blues after a couple of games coming off the bench.

Haumole Olakau’atu has been rewarded for his bruising club form. Picture: Hannah Peters/Getty ImagesSource: Supplied

“I thought he was almost the first one picked the way he’s played the last seven or eight weeks,” Trbojevic said.

“He’s been our best player and has almost been the best player in the comp the way he’s gone after it.

“He’s obviously played Origin before coming off the bench, but if you give him that opportunity to start on the right edge, it really suits him because he can get into the game and hopefully can cause some havoc.”

Meanwhile, Trbojevic has backed Tedesco to fire for his state after the former Blues skipper earnt a recall at the expense of Panthers star Dylan Edwards.

Both men have been brilliant for the Blues, with Daley opting for Tedesco after the brilliant run of form that helped him win last year’s Dally M Medal continued at the start of the 2026 season.

“He’s been unbelievable this season and last year, and he’s picked up this year where he left off,” the Sea Eagles star said.

“He’s always been very damaging around the ruck and gets the ball late in sets to attack tiring forwards, but he’s also done a lot of good work out wide, and that’s where he’s grown a lot.

“I wouldn’t like to be Laurie Daley in that situation because they’re two incredible players, but whichever way you go, you’re going to get someone to do a job.”

Kalyn Ponga has a lot of respect for Reece Walsh.
