South African golfer Garrick Higgo has split with his caddie following last week’s embarassing tee-time blunder during the PGA Championship at Aronimink.

During the major’s first round, Higgo arrived from an adjacent practice putting green for his 7.18am tee time at 7.19am, told by officials that he was late and would be penalised.

The 27-year-old didn’t have his cell phone or watch as he ran over with putter in hand, and while meandering toward the tee, caddie Austin Gaugert was seen urging him to rush.

“It wasn’t a surprise,” Higgo later explained.

“I was late. My caddie was yelling at me to get to the tee. I knew it was probably going to happen.”

He added: “If you know me, then you know I am very casual and laid back.

“I don’t want to be there 10 minutes early. I know that five minutes is fine. I thought I had time. I was obviously too casual.”

Higgo ultimately copped a two-stroke penalty and missed the cut by one shot, becoming the first player to be penalised for arriving late at the PGA Championship since David Lipsky in 2019.

He was later seen having an animated discussion with officials in the scoring tent.

“My caddie dropped my Trackman in the locker, and I went to the putting green thinking I still had five minutes,” Higgo continued.

“I hit one putt and then heard my name being called. My caddie was yelling at me and I ran down and got a two-shot penalty.”

Former US golfer Kevin Kisner criticised Higgo on the Fore Play podcast.

“I don’t understand how you can even risk it,” he said.

“Just get over there.”

On Monday, Higgo’s agent to Golfweekthat Gaugert had been replaced by Nick Cavendish-Pell ahead of this week’s CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Dallas.
