Perth is on the cusp of beating its long-term rainfall average in every month of winter \u2014 the first time it would have happened in nearly three decades.<\/p>\n
With the drenching the city received overnight, the rainfall now sits at 110mm for August.<\/p>\n
The long-term average for August is 122.7mm \u2014 and with more than half the month still to go and more rain on the way, it is sure to be beaten.<\/p>\n
With another burst of wet weather predicted to hit late on Sunday and through most of next week, it seems likely Perth will get the 12.7mm of rain needed to overtake the August average.<\/p>\n
If not, there is still almost two weeks for the city\u2019s third-wettest month to go past the average.<\/p>\n
It would then mean that Perth has exceeded its long-term rainfall average in every month of winter \u2014 June, July and August \u2014 for the first time since 1996.<\/p>\n
In June, the city had 129.8mm of rain, with the long-term average being 127.2mm.<\/p>\n
In July, it had 174.4mm. The long-term average, taken from Bureau of Meteorology\u2019s Mt Lawley site since 1993, is 147mm.<\/p>\n
Perth topped its total winter rainfall average for the months of June, July and August combined in 2024 but not separately. June was below average.<\/p>\n

It comes as a severe storm hit the metropolitan area overnight, sending trampolines flying and uprooting trees.<\/p>\n
The strongest wind gusts for 35 years were recorded in suburbs such as Jandakot, where winds reached 117km\/h.<\/p>\n
Long-term Bibra Lake resident Geoff Diver said he thought a \u201cmini-tornado\u201d had ripped through the area.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt sounded like a freight train coming overhead and then a couple of really large, like 20m or 30m, trees were blown down,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt created real carnage, it came through half of the park and ripped that down, taking down half of a tree in our backyard, then it carried on across the road and took down another really big tree, it just missed two houses and then just kept going.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got a tree on our fence, which hit the car, like it\u2019s hanging over the car over the gutters of the house … it was like a big explosion and then it was back to dead quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n
