And while her work sounds hi-tech, it all started with a simple fascination.<\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298IZG\">\u201cI always loved medicine and the human body, but I didn\u2019t think I wanted to be a doctor,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298mzG\">\u201cThen, at about 15, I saw something called biomedical engineering in a careers handbook. I thought, \u2018That\u2019s exactly what I want to do\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"U10022554052980z\">Back then, biomedical engineering was barely on the map. There were no degrees, so Professor Reynolds studied physics before finding a masters program in the field. She didn\u2019t set out to become an academic, but a series of research opportunities \u2013 and a job at Flinders University in 1997 \u2013 kept her in the lab. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U10022554052985bB\">\u201cFlinders was perfect,\u201d she says. \u201cWe shared a campus with a teaching hospital, and it was the first university in Australia to offer an accredited biomedical engineering degree. The job description basically sounded like it was written for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298K7B\">Reynolds\u2019 career covers an extensive range of projects. Early work involved pulse oximeters \u2013 the little devices clipped on fingers to measure blood oxygen \u2013 and prosthetic heart valves that were failing in patients. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298kZG\">Later, she turned her focus to surgical tools, figuring out how to safely implant screws in bone and prevent failures in the operating theatre.<\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298drB\">But her talents truly shone through in the Medical Device Partnering Program, which she established in 2008. The program acts like an incubator for ideas, guiding clinicians and even independent inventors through the complex process of bringing medical devices to market. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298y5E\">\u201cWe see 60 to 100 ideas a year,\u201d she explains. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298S\">\u201cSome are simple assistive devices, like something to help a person stand. Others are implantable electronics that need to be tightly regulated. Every day, a new idea pops up, and it\u2019s thrilling to help it along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298MiB\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just about the tech \u2013 we want to make sure these ideas actually get to patients who need them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298UTE\">Helping ideas survive beyond the lab is just as important as the engineering itself. Professor Reynolds\u2019 team advises on commercial potential, regulatory hurdles, and prototyping. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298AQF\">One standout project is a cancer-detecting probe that measures tissue acidity to locate tumours. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298KX\">These days technology is moving at lightspeed with examples such as Cloud connection, AI or even drug-delivering implants but Professor Reynolds and her team are navigating that complexity with optimism.<\/p>\n<p id=\"U10022554052983VG\">\u201cThings are more complex than ever,\u201d she says. \u201cBut that also makes the opportunities amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298ROI\">That spirit of possibility now extends well beyond the medical sphere. As the newly appointed Director of the Flinders Factory of the Future, Professor Reynolds is at the helm of the transdisciplinary advanced manufacturing Research Hub where technology, engineering, and human factors come together to deliver practical, evidence-based solutions. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298SoH\">She and her team are driving productivity, reducing costs, and opening new frontiers in advanced manufacturing. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U10022554052985W\">Recognition has followed, being named Professional Engineer of the Year in 2010 and Scientist of the Year in 2012, but she says the awards reflect her team more than her. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298KAI\">\u201cAs an academic, you\u2019re only as good as the people you work with,\u201d she says. \u201cI have colleagues who bring expertise in governance, research, industry partnerships, and working with First Nations communities. Any success I\u2019ve had is about the team, not me.\u201d Her approach to innovation goes beyond engineering \u2013 it\u2019s about connecting people, ideas, and opportunities. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298vGC\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just the technical problem,\u201d she says. \u201cSuccess comes down to understanding the need, navigating the regulatory pathway, and making the right connections. Even the most brilliant idea will stall without the right support behind it. Our job is to bridge that gap \u2013 to take promising concepts and help shape them into solutions that genuinely improve lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298ZAG\">Even with decades of experience, Professor Reynolds says she still gets a thrill from seeing a good idea take off. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U10022554052982pG\">\u201cSometimes you see a fantastic concept and it doesn\u2019t go anywhere \u2013 not because the idea itself is bad, but because of funding constraints, or the wrong connections,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298C6G\">\u201cOur role is to spot those ideas early and help them along so patients can benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298smC\">From heart valves to cancer probes, from surgical instruments to cutting-edge industry innovation, Professor Reynolds\u2019 impressive body of work is bridging the gap between science and impact. <\/p>\n<p id=\"U1002255405298ZSE\">\u201cEvery day there\u2019s something new,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p id=\"U1003732369230IgE\">\u201cBiomedical engineering is about problem-solving in the real world, and there\u2019s nothing more satisfying than seeing it make a difference for someone.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Professor Karen Reynolds\u2019 office at Flinders University is a place where curiosity meets real-world problem-solving.
