But he remains a leader within the club as it goes through a rebuilt.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was very much aware through the trade period off the back end where the club was at \u2013 it was clear it was rebuilding and backing in your draft,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think for me, as much as it isn\u2019t always four points, it\u2019s trying to find those little wins \u2013 those little enjoyment moments. Whether it\u2019s training, conversations with young players and trying to guide them along the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked by AFL360 co-host Garry Lyon: \u201cIs that enough?\u201d<\/p>\n
Merrett replied: \u201cThat\u2019s where I am now, that\u2019s what it is. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve got to make the most of my current situation where I\u2019m at and where the club\u2019s at,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel it\u2019s a big responsibility.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah I want to win, and we\u2019re trying to win every week!<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you\u2019re 1-9 and you\u2019re watching big games, of course you get jealous and you want to be playing in those big games and experience the big crowds.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo doubt Pendles\u2019 game on the weekend is going to be one of those moments you feel envious of.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Merrett said there were positives coming in the tough start to the season.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven the scoreboard hasn\u2019t been going our way \u2026 you see glimpses of (Jacob) Farrow and (Archie) Roberts out there, you get a little bit of a spring in your step. That bit of enjoyment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think any AFL player likes losing \u2013 clearly 1-9 is not where we want to be, where I want to be.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s so many areas in my game that I want to get better at and I\u2019m in a rush to do that.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re obviously all in it together as a coaching group and playing group.<\/p>\n
\u201c(But) you\u2019re trying to perform as well individually and making sure you\u2019re holding up your end of the bargain to then try and help develop those around you.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a challenge in itself.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo doubt we can certainly be better \u2026 The pleasing part? Those young guys are taking their opportunity with both hands.<\/p>\n
