Victor Radley<\/a> was slapped with a 10-game suspension without pay and $30,000 fine last year by the Roosters<\/a>, which marked the biggest sanction in club history and saw him out of pocket to the tune of approximately $100,000 in total.<\/p>\n

But the decision to allow Radley back earlier than originally anticipated<\/a> could mean the lock-forward gets the majority of that money back through State of Origin payments.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old was originally going to be out until Magic Round, but after the Roosters decided to amend his ban to include the three Ashes matches he missed for England last year and two pre-season games, it drastically shortened his time away from the field.<\/p>\n

Since returning in club land, Radley has been in solid form and a change in eligibility rules for Origin<\/a> now means he can play for both NSW and England – something that coach Laurie Daley<\/a> took full advantage of when he named his squad for game one. <\/p>\n

While realising a lifelong dream is top of mind for Radley heading into next week’s series opener, it will also give him an unexpected financial boost that will go a long way towards soothing the pain he felt when he was hit with the Roosters’ tough sanction last year. <\/p>\n

Players who represent NSW or Queensland in the sport’s toughest arena earn $30,000 per game – meaning if Radley features in all three matches of his debut series for the Blues, he could pocket $90,000 and make up the majority of the penalty he paid.<\/p>\n

There’s certainly no indication Nick Politis<\/a> and the Roosters hierarchy allowed the 28-year-old enforcer to return in round six just so he could put himself in the frame for Origin, especially given the fact very few within the game thought he would be picked.<\/p>\n

But it has created the perfect storm for Radley to fulfil his long-held ambition to go from a young Clovelly Crocodile to donning the sky blue jumper in front of 85,000 fans.<\/p>\n

“I’m very happy for him, it’s fantastic for him to be there for the first time,” Politis told The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a> after his selection.<\/p>\n

“That [decision] probably helped him. We didn’t specifically bring him back for [Origin], but it obviously helps him. He deserved to come back. He had paid enough penalty.<\/p>\n

“He paid dearly financially, well over $100,000 in fines and loss of pay. He paid $30,000 to charity at St Vincent’s, he missed out on going to England and about 10,000 quid.<\/p>\n

“He paid dearly more than anybody else.<\/p>\n

“That’s why we decided he had served enough to come back early, which probably helped him to achieve his lifetime goal.”<\/p>\n

Radley has been one of the most popular and charismatic figures since bursting onto the scene as a teenager and starring in back-to-back premierships in 2018 and 2019.<\/p>\n

His larrikin persona – summed up by his hilarious “beers, beers and more beers” moment after the 2018 grand final – endeared him to many within rugby league.<\/p>\n

But with that came the potential of Radley landing in hot water for off-field reasons and that’s what occurred last year when he almost had his Roosters contract torn up.<\/p>\n

After paying his penance with the Roosters and earning the trust back with his coaches and teammates, Radley now has the chance to shine at a level many expected him to feature at many years ago before his defection to play for England.<\/p>\n

Speaking to 9News Sydney on Monday night, the tough middle forward said his support system – both at the Roosters and away from football – helped him move past the off-field issues that threatened to derail his career at the Bondi glamour club.<\/p>\n

“I’m grateful of the people around me, the club, my partner and my parents, more so than being proud of myself – they’re the ones that got me through it,” Radley said.<\/p>\n

“Getting the phone call [from Daley] meant a lot. I just flipped my mindset to stay calm.<\/p>\n

“I’ll just do the same as I do for the Roosters every week … having high aggression, but high discipline at the same time.”<\/p>\n

Radley will line up alongside club teammates James Tedesco and Reece Robson next week, but will also be playing against Lindsay Collins and Sam Walker<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He expects Walker to cop some brutal treatment upon his Origin debut.<\/p>\n

“Sammy Walker’s gonna get what Sammy Walker gets every single game, nothing’s gonna change … he gets everyone running at him,” Radley said with a smile.<\/p>\n
