Victor Wembanyama just entered the GOAT debate. Yes, really… and here’s why.

Throughout the entire 80-year history of the NBA, you can count the truly iconic, flashbulb moment ‘arrival games’ on one hand.

These are the performances that transcend winning or losing, extend beyond a single box score and point towards a more significant tectonic shift. Especially remarkable are the ones that happen sooner than anyone expected and in the playoffs, the ahead-of-schedule performances that defiantly send a message to the rest of the league: “I’m here.”

Not every inner-circle great player has one and there is no set definition. Context matters as much as any singular result or stat line. Borrowing from the lexicon of iconic U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, “you know it when you see it.”

These are the rarest of rare performances, which all but indicate that this is exactly where we’re going.

IT WAS WEMBY’S NIGHT.

41 PTS. 24 REB. 49 MIN. It’s not hyperbole.

The youngest player in NBA history with 40 points and 20 rebounds in a playoff game.

The pull-up 30-footer to force overtime from the same spot as Steph Curry’s ‘double bang’ shot.

The multiple ‘just throw it up somewhere near the rim and I’ll dunk it like a Nerf hoop’ plays.

The soul-snatching blocks and countless other shot-altering, play-busting defensive possessions.

The instant meme posing in front of his own bench in overtime.

The defiant postgame interview when asked if he took Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s pregame MVP ceremony personally. And doing it all on the home court of the defending champions, who against everyone not named San Antonio look unbeatable.

SN ARCHIVE (1986): ‘That was God disguised as Michael Jordan’

Some will argue not to overreact, that it’s only one game. Some will say it’s irresponsible to bloviate about one game in what figures to be a very long series — and one the Spurs could absolutely still lose. Some performances, like Jordan once upon a time getting swept in Boston, transcend any single result, for they foreshadow something far more consequential.

It’s not being a Prisoner of the Moment to acknowledge and embrace what we all just saw happen in time.

Victor Wembanyama is officially here.
