The course address is 972 Ohio Drive SW, Washington, DC.<\/p>\n
The Trump administration recently unveiled plans for a major overhaul of the historic municipal course, proposing a championship-style redesign by Fazio Design. Supporters see an opportunity to restore aging infrastructure, address chronic flooding issues, and elevate one of the nation\u2019s most recognizable public golf settings.\u00a0Critics worry about something else.<\/p>\n
Does \u201cchampionship golf\u201d eventually become code for higher prices, fewer everyday players, environmental impacts, and a slow drift away from the public mission that made East Potomac special in the first place?<\/p>\n
Maybe parts of that vision sound exciting.<\/p>\n
East Potomac absolutely deserves investment.\u00a0The course has struggled with flooding, deferred maintenance, and aging infrastructure for years.<\/p>\n
But public golfers hear phrases like championship destination a little differently than developers do.\u00a0We hear: How much will it cost?<\/p>\n
To be fair, President Trump and Interior officials have repeatedly said East Potomac would remain a public course with discounted rates for local players from DC, Maryland, and Virginia. They have pointed to nationally known municipal courses such as Bethpage Black in New York and Torrey Pines in California as examples of what East Potomac could become.<\/p>\n
And maybe that reassurance helps some people.\u00a0But public and affordable are not always the same thing.\u00a0Some of America\u2019s most famous public courses remain technically open to everyone \u2014 but the greens fees tell another story.<\/p>\n
Pebble Beach is public. Its greens fees have climbed above $600.\u00a0Torrey Pines is public. Non-resident golfers can pay well over $300 during peak periods.\u00a0TPC Sawgrass welcomes public play, too, but rounds can run several hundred dollars. Even Bethpage Black \u2014 often used as an example of affordable championship golf \u2014 keeps prices lower largely because New York residents receive preferred access and reduced rates.<\/p>\n
Public access does not automatically mean everyday access.\u00a0And that distinction matters.<\/p>\n
Right now, East Potomac remains one of the more affordable places to learn the game.<\/p>\n
An adult round on the Blue Course currently costs roughly $42 on weekdays and $48 on weekends.<\/p>\n

Kids can still walk onto the Red Course \u2014 East Potomac\u2019s par-3 layout \u2014 for roughly nine dollars.<\/p>\n
Nine dollars.\u00a0That is the kind of number that creates golfers.\u00a0That is the kind of number that lets a kid with a hand-me-down set of clubs fall in love with the game.<\/p>\n
And while lawsuits, environmental concerns, preservation fights, and political arguments continue to swirl around the redesign proposal, I hope decision-makers remember what makes municipal golf special in the first place.\u00a0It is opportunity and possibility. Public golf courses remain one of the last places where a kid with a used set of clubs, a pull cart, stubborn determination, and absolutely no pedigree can still show up and belong.<\/p>\n
And while I\u2019m ranting, let me say this too:<\/p>\n
Bring back youth caddy programs at DMV golf courses.<\/p>\n
Seriously.\u00a0Kids learn far more than golf on a golf course.<\/p>\n
They learn patience.<\/p>\n
They learn manners.<\/p>\n
They learn etiquette.<\/p>\n
They learn honesty because golf is one of the few sports where integrity is built directly into the game. You count your own score. You call penalties on yourself. Nobody is hiding behind referees or replay booths.<\/p>\n
You also learn self-defeat.\u00a0That may sound harsh, but it is true.<\/p>\n
Golf teaches you very quickly that nobody owes you success. You have to practice if you want to improve. And practice in golf is often lonely, repetitive, and frustrating.\u00a0There are no participation trophies waiting at the driving range. You either put in the work or you do not.<\/p>\n
And when you lose, you shake hands anyway.\u00a0You praise your opponent\u2019s great shots.\u00a0You learn how to fail without falling apart.<\/p>\n
Frankly, those are qualities many grown adults probably should have learned earlier in life.<\/p>\n
That is the real gift of golf.\u00a0Not luxury branding.\u00a0Not exclusivity.\u00a0Not elite image-building.\u00a0The gift is character.\u00a0The gift is discipline.\u00a0The gift is humility.<\/p>\n
And if publicly accessible golf slowly disappears behind rising green fees and \u201cdestination course\u201d pricing, we are not just losing affordable recreation.\u00a0We are losing one of the last accessible pathways into a sport that quietly teaches resilience, accountability, sportsmanship, respect, and perseverance.<\/p>\n
Improve East Potomac?<\/p>\n
Absolutely.<\/p>\n
Restore it?<\/p>\n
Yes.<\/p>\n
Protect it from flooding and neglect?<\/p>\n
Of course.<\/p>\n
But do not turn it into something ordinary families can no longer afford to enjoy.\u00a0Because golf should not belong only to people with privilege.<\/p>\n
